Audie Murphy was a hunter, so was Alvin York and Chris Kyle.
And they were the types who were able to 'transcend' their hunting experiences to a combat situation and that was a good thing.

However like Andy said not all hunters would make 'combat soldiers' in the formal sense - and might not even be able to function as a 'civilian' in a non-military role if confronted with the defense of themselves, family, friends or country.

I doubt a 'Rifle around every blade of grass' (as applied to what Admiral Yamamoto allegedly said) would necessarily be a reality.

To be honest here....and speaking from my experiences*

Combat and the killing of others ( in combat ) is the most intimate act one can do to another person.
Even more intimate than lovemaking.
With lovemaking you can give the promise of life...with killing ( in combat ) , you can give both the promise of life and death.

Just because one is a good lover or good hunter...does not mean that they will be a good soldier or effective in combat.

*With that in mind....combat and killing is very individualistic , every one who experiences it will have both similarities and differences , with how they feel and react ...some of which occur at once...others change over time.

And with all that I am done here...not for what anyone has said....but that I just don't wish to discuss this further.

My point being many who grew up hunting, several out of necessity to help feed the family, turned out to me exemplary military men and have done so for generations. Alvin York (WWI), Audie Murphy (WWII), Carlos Hathcock (Vietnam, should have included him in my last post) and Chris Kyle (GWOT)

I guess when I read the OP I looked at it differently as I looked at it as there are so many gun owners that are hunters that weather or not they could or would make good solders doesn't really matter, it's the fact that so many folks in America are armed and at least think they are capable of killing a large animal for food. So would you as an possible invading country really want to take the chance they would just do nothing to defend their country/Family from invasion. Even if they just defended their family could play hell with an invading army when you have a posable 10 to 50 million folks doing it.

The issue is, is it worth taking a chance to invade a country of 100-million-gun owners, a third of which are avid hunters in the hopes they would just sit on their A$$es. I know I would not want to take the chance to be proven wrong.

I keed i keed.

American gun owners probably beat the Chinese just by BMI :p

You have to count people like myself. Kid plays AA hockey and takes up a lot of time. If you didn't know, hockey season goes from August to March. Practice 2-3x a week and 2 games every weekend, State competition and out of state tournaments. He would rather play hockey right now and I have to support him. Sports are a great life lesson as well. 14 years old and has 3 guns. 410 shotgun, 14.5" AR-15 and a Glock 19. He's been bugging me for 6.5. Creedmoor bolt gun. Sounds like he's wanting to get out and hunt. We go to the range 2-3x a month.
I understand. I've gone hunting once. I like shooting a lot more, because hunting is hardly any shooting, plus - buying beef is cheaper.

I wouldn't say all hunters would make good soldiers. But, if I had two guys who were willing fighters and one hunted and one didn't, the guy who knows how to hunt, has experience with fieldcraft, and shoot in the field, is at no disadvantage.

The hippies in the '70s had it all wrong. "Make war, not love." :D

I don't have any problem with this, and to expand upon what Andy posted earlier, it all comes down to that one moment when you have a real live human being in your sights, your finger on the trigger and a decision to make, to end that humans life,............ or not! It's a very emotional experience, not every one can come to terms with that, its a very personal thing to have to experience and you have to live with your self after! As a hunter, one should be experienced in taking life, but it's quite different when the animal your hunting is one of your own species! I cannot tell you what any ones experience may be like, when that moment comes to them, only that it changes you in ways you never could imagine, until you experience it your self!

As we say in the canoe club...

"Pax Per Tridentum"

Not everyone can be the sharp end of the trident, it's ok to be the shaft... that's important as well.
Today some kids were fighting, but it was expressed by another adult, "I don't think any of their punches made contact." So I said, "well it sounds like they both need more practice then!" The funny part is they thought I was joking.

I've seen some darn good shooters. I've also seen some darn stupid people who shoot guns. Note i did not call those people shooters. Shotgunning a beer and unloading 2 or 3 rounds in the general direction of a pizza box does not a formidable person make. However, the sheer number of dipschits hurling lead randomly at an invading force would at least make that force question their life choices, so I think as a country we're pretty safe from a conventional mainland invasion

People worried about conventional warfare forget that throughout history plenty of times the populace faced a military force of their own flag. I see that playing out far more likely.
