Animals and children... both are considered, even by many criminals, beyond innocent to be defenseless. Crimes against the defenseless are considered to be heinous. But yeah, I think it's crucial to realize that people are instinctively aware that conscious decisions to commit bad acts are different and are punished accordingly.
