Don't forget the F-12 interceptor version... two-seater like an SR, but raised cockpit for visibility, chine cut back to not interfere with radar, folding fin under the belly. Also, the back half of one toasted in a fire was joined with the front of the SR-71A Structural Engineering Mockup to replace a crashed SR... "The Bastard" was a favorite among pilots because being a little lighter than the others meant faster acceleration.

The ONE I wanted to fly as a kid was 955, the Skunk Works's retained in-house R&D ship, easily recognized by the skunk on the tail.

Definitely a cool plane. When they were bringing one of the last ones on a flatbed truck through Oregon years ago, I made a stop to go see her in person. Sad to see these out of commission now.

Also, after LBJ and his bum-sucking arsepirate lackey Captain Strange killed the F-12, its weapons systems would be evolved into the F-14 Tomcat's fire-control system and Phoenix missiles.

Had the pleasure of hearing one of the SR-71 pilots speak at a get-together a few years ago. My favorite quote, "You've never been lost until you've been lost at Mach 3."

Had the pleasure of interviewing Col. Graham, one of the last 9th SRW Commanding Officers in the SR era, and several other Habus during their event up at the Museum of Flight. :D

I really enjoyed Ben R. Rich's autobiography of the U-2 & SR-71.
