BTW (pistol rds were not advocated in any of my posts ie .45... we were discussing 7.62 rifles)
Psst... I started the thread and I wanted to know why a 308. People keep saying things about 762x39. Personally I think it's a good idea to have a couple different rifles in different calibers. You can ask a carpenter if he has only one hammer. I bet you he has more than one but has a personal favorite. Ask a mechanic if he has only metric or standard wrenches. The thing is that each tool no matter if it is a wrench, hammer, firearm, or whatever you can think of has a purpose and sometimes you need more than one! :D

So the question is @akoperator47 are you going to buy one and if so which one. What scope are you going to put on it and do you have it zero'd in yet at the range. :D
I have a package that it is coming with.

The optic has got to go but it's a Rock River Arms. With the brake it's 22". I will probably get a Leupold for it. Not sure which one yet. I got it all for just under $1000. I don't have a bunch of money so I have 9 months of payments.

But it's mine after that. Heck I think I need to go to one of those cleanup shooting events. Be a blast!:D

SG ammo is selling 500 rounds of tulammo 150gr for $167.50 in 7.62x51 and cans of 540 rounds L2A2 ball ammo from Malaysia $199.80
That is the reason to own the 308/7.62. An adaquate caliber for any North American game (or use) buy a couple of cans of ball ammo and a couple of boxes of hunting ammo for under 20.00 at walmart, you are good for a lot of shooting and hunting for years.

Nice let us know how the first outing went.

So yesterday I was in Sportsman's Warehouse in Hillsboro - just window shopping.

I noticed a number of things:

1) They had a LOT more powder than when I was last there (several years ago). They even had a 5 pound container of Trail Boss. A lot more bullets too.

2) They had a lot more ammo - but still no huge displays of bricks of .22 RF.

So I looked at the relative quantities of 7.62x39 v. 5.56

Yes - about twice as much 5.56 as 7.62x39 - just a rough estimate. If you count just the 'bulk' ammo alone, then 5.56 was about the same quantity as 7.62x39, but then you add in the .223 ammo grouped by manufacturer (SW puts manufacturer ammo together, not caliber), then that about doubles the quantity.

I think this is due to two things:

It is a lot cheaper to buy 7.62x39 online and in bulk quantities than at a sporting goods store. Maybe if a person goes into a dedicated gun shop that has AKs (I do not recall see any AKs in SW's gun racks), then they will find bulk 7.62x39.

Fewer manufacturers like Remington, Winchester sell/market 7.62x39 in bulk quantities. Most of the ammo in SW was Tula/et. al., some Hornady.

7.62x51 was there, in about the same quantities as any other chambering except 5.56 and 7.62x39 and 9mm

9x19mm challenges 5.56 for quantity - especially bulk. They had quite a few 250 rd boxes of bulk 9mm FMJ ammo.

.45 ACP, not near as much.

Not sure how SW sells that ammo when it can be bought online delivered to your doorstep for much less - except some of the premium ammo, which can occasionally be found on sale online for less.

I qualified w/ a M14 in the Navy which is why I collect M14 type rifles. On Navy ships in the late '80's, M14s were in the small arms locker. I guess I never fell in love w/ the 5.56 NATO round. I also shot position rifle w/ my Super Match and DCM/CMP with my Armscorp NM rifle. I always liked the M14 better than M1s, G3s & FALs. Hit something w/ 7.62 NATO & it will go down.

So I have taken my RRA AR10 out on three different occasions. I really like this rifle. I am thinking of getting another 308 but I am probably going with an Armalite. They have the DEF10; I have been looking at getting. Has a 4 inch shorter barrel and weighs 2.3 lbs less.

.308/7.62X51 is a fine main battle rifle. It is an excellent, efficient, hyper-accurate cartridge. Loading is a cinch and the platforms for it are well proven. Notice how the 5.56 is being stretched every which way to make it a little more ".308 like"? Ever heavier bullets with faster twist to stabilize, Blown out cases, larger diameter bullets etc.

Personally, setting the 7.62X51 aside, I like the 7.62X54R. huh? Say, in an AVT40. Rock on, bro.

I think its interesting how 7.62x51 is considered a heavy infantry caliber or a caliber reserved for crew-served machine guns and some sniper applications.

As a hunting cartridge, its usually thought of as a fine "women and kids" caliber.

Also in combat we couldn't have expanding ammunition because it's considered inhumane per geneva conventions, but Fish and game requires it because FMJ is considered inhumane.
