Good point @bobdog308.
I'm old and rather low speed, high drag, not to mention just a wee bit paranoid, so I want a force multiplier just in case it's ever called for. I need every advantage I can get.

I was raised on the .30-06 and mostly shot that caliber all my life, so even though I've had a few .308's, I don't have very much experience with the round.

Hey gog, the 30-06 and .308 win are very close, basically the 30/06 is about 200 FPS faster....you are slicing hairs between the two.....BUT for a big assed bull elk or a large bear....I'd definitely go the route of the 30-06 Springfield loaded with a 180 grain very stout bullet pushed to max velocity....remember, when the us govt invented the 30/06 one of the criteria that it must have was to be able to kill a war horse at 1000 yards.
In my opinion...the 30-06 Springfield is the best cartridge ever designed.
