Modern V.W's are not reliable. Hope it works out O.K.
I'm a Japanese car guy, but I did lease a new GTI a few years ago. During my 3 year lease it went in for warranty work 10 times. One of them was for a new transmission.

I already know I'll be needing to add some fancy German tools to my toolbox, and I don't think harbor freight carries any of the funky stuff 🤣

I worked with two guys who loved to switch to a different car every year or two. Their simple advice to me then: If it's German-made never buy it and only lease it, and if it is Japanese-made it is probably OK to buy it.

What if is German-made Japanese car?

Keep it long enough, you'll find out.

BMW never fails to live up to their reputation. I will admit, they've become much better at going a few years before the little issues start piling into bigger issues.

BMW is definitely better than VW, my buddy had a 2016 BMW coupe with the twin turbo inline 6 (that was about the time BMW began renaming the sedan and coupe 3 series, I forget if it was a 335, 340 or 440) and during his 3 year lease, ZERO problems.
So, recently I researched that car as a possible fun used car, it's been 10 years now, and yeah, not worth owning despite being apparently very reliable early on.

I like the Supra, and I want a fun car to keep 20 years, so I'm looking for a Nissan Z.

I had a Kia Rio. Great little car. It was basically given to me and I ended up giving it to my son when I bought a new car.
They aren't on my "hit list", but Kias are very good cars.
Had a first year Hyundai Accent 4 door bought new in '95, 6 years and 150k miles later it was still going strong. Only maintenance I did was oil changes and tires, still ran like a clock when I traded it in. That car was not a barn burner but was quick enough and a blast to drive, small and responsive.

Also had a loaded out '01 Sonata GLS, well behaved and appointed car, wouldn't win any beauty contests, but was a solid value automobile. The problem with Hyundai and Kia is body styles only last a couple of years, making the car old before its time.

I have a 2014 Hyundai Sonata "daily driver" that I've had for 10 years now. Only work short of oil/filter/fluid changes and tires was a new steering module. But that was my own damn fault for driving 20+ miles at 40 mph on a remote, wash-boarded, Forest Service Road in Idaho as a "shortcut." A pretty expensive one at that...

I had one of those (the '86½) shortly after I got out of college (the second time), back in 1988. Hung onto it to 1993.
Great car and a h00t to drive, especially flat out! But it cost me way too much in tickets and tires. I was just too young to behave myself with it... :s0140:

Work truck is a '12 Tundra, Personal/Weekend car is a '11 Raptor (smiles per gallon), wife's car/ mom mobile is a '22 Rav that gets all the mpgs! For most people I can't recommend those things enough! It gets like 33mpg awd with all terrains and all the family supplies! And no batteries to worry about. (Though I bet the hybrids are even more efficient.)

So, I have to ask you... and no offense meant...

When you had the WRX, did you drive it like an bubblegum?

Like every single WRX I've ever seen on the road. It's like there's a chemical baked into that car that gets into the driver's brain whenever they get behind the wheel of one of those cars... 🤪
