Vets are potential extremists. But so are poor people, religious fundamentalists, political kooks, convicts and people who spend too much time on Facebook.

The concern that some of the people who are supposed to be the backbone of our society might prefer to destroy it is worth doing something about. The suggestion that this minority group exists is not anything like saying all veterans are likely to be like this.

But if you just are looking for something to get pissed about, sure the very suggestion that some veterans might end up as a-holes you can get worked up about. It is little different when the left got pissed that Trump suggested that some immigrants were rapists.

The answer seems to be: None. How you want to interpret that is up to you, but I think the idea that passing a health care bill took all of the White House staff's time is a little bit silly.

There is the possibility, raised on this thread by several other people, that the struggle to maintain majority is enough that the Democrats can't risk trying more gun control. But maybe they are having human flesh pizza somewhere plotting their first new gun law in nearly 3 decades.

Literally the only reason there has not been an AWB 2.0 is because Democrats have not had total control of the House, Senate, and Presidency since the last AWB was passed (as others have already mentioned). Obama had it for about a year but gun control was not on the national agenda given the healthcare push and Great Recession. Furthermore, there were a lot of "Blue Dog" democrats in the Senate and House who likely made their supermajority null and void when it came to gun control (much like Joe Manchin is doing now).

The House produced all sorts of bills with no hopes of even making it through the Senate or White House. That's why we are talking about laws, not bills that Congress votes on to look good to constituents.

If the Democrats had a clear path, I have not doubt they would pass all sorts of crap. But they don't, so there is a real difference between the posturing all politicians do and the reality of what is actually going to get done. And that's what I've been talking about - reality. It is unrealistic to think that gun control is going to get passed before the mid-terms - per the OP.

Biden definitely made gun control a much more prominent component of his campaign. Obama, though historically in support of extreme gun control measures, remained much more ambiguous during his initial campaign.
