In a way, you could say the pandemic killed them. Mental health took a lot of people and I still see signs of people reacting or doing things they probably wouldn't have pre-covid.

One coworker wearing the same beat up M95 mask 12hrs a day. Another can't/won't come back to work on a regular bases due to anxiety.

On the other hand, a good soundtrack and a drone makes everything look doable and cool on social media. It's as real as any staged reality show. Entertainment value only. These found out the hard way.

I read about this awhile back when they were first discovered. That article mentioned there was only a partially completed lean-to and they found more recent receipts from well after the time they had originally left. Indicating they had the means to travel and buy groceries at a nearby town.

Makes one wonder why they wouldn't see the writing on the wall and bail out without any type of adequate winter shelter... and they were supposing winter had fallen on them suddenly that prevented them from trekking out(?).

Play stupid games... win stupid prizes. Sad and pointless way to cash your chips in.

As pointed out above...a tough way to go for sure.

Mother Nature is a bit<h , often fickle , along with both being uncaring and unforgiving , in regards to you and even your best laid plans.

NO they killed themselves. Their weaknesses due to potentially latent (or hidden) mental issues led them to make really bad choices and Covid was just the catalyst.

If Covid was the instigator that influenced people into doing things they probably wouldn't have previously then what next might influence similar behavior and actions?

What does this say for people who are/were essentially unaffected by Covid? Are they 'stronger', and possibly better equipped mentally to say, 'weather out storms' of a different nature ?

My point being if something as 'benign' as Covid can influence irrational activity and choices in some people how will these people react to something that is a bit more severe and may influence their lives in a more dramatic manner?

So in short, it was a self-correcting problem, yeah?

Thing about YouTube is it is another form of reality TV. Most that "live off grid" on YouTube don't actually live like that. If they have the correct number of subscribers, they are living quite nicely via the $$$ they are making in YouTube.

Many are blinded by social media as this back door to how to live, but in reality most on there are looking to make it into a source of money, not to educate or show folks how to live. It is a job.

The elevation of the campsite they were at is right at 10,000 ft. Even in the summertime there can be snow and temps below freezing. Winter lows average 0°f to -15°f, but can get to -40°f. Not as much snow as the Cascades, but 4' - 5' snow depth can really screw with necessities, like finding firewood.

You are correct about that....I had a close call chasing a lion with the dogs near silverton or. Long story short I ended up swimming silver creek in November to make the tree. It was a long cold walk back to the pickup.

Aside from the humor in this sadly, this is probably correct.

A extreme example is the crazy woman who was vidded screaming on her knees when Trump was elected. We've all seen it.

While probably still alive she may be still carrying her anger and hatred for him inside, and who knows what could set her off again - and maybe influence something even worse - like maybe driving into a MAGA rally or something?

SO - if certain events, situations etc. cause unbalanced people to behave in highly irrational manners maybe it's not such a bad thing if they 'self correct' before say, causing harm to others.

The notion that you'll not only survive but thrive "out in nature" without all the "evils" of "modern industrial society" is more common than it was just a few decades ago, and it was a thing even back then. And yeah, YT et. al. has something to do with that.

Nature will kill you. And not even notice while she's doing it.
