What the USA did to them in the old days was as bad as it gets, until they decided to make them feel like they couldn't survive or prosper without the Govt giving them everything.

That's not just The Native Americans anymore either.

Frankly the statement is ridiculous and out of context as most natives were forced into forts that acted as internment camps where they were forced to rely on the government. The closest thing I've heard is when the bolsheviks forced private land holders into camp in the 1930's.
I mean it's rediculous to justify current abuses on past injustices, as we can only move forward. It's just as ridiculous to say "natives" as different tribes have different impacts. There would be no salmon in idaho if it weren't for the tribes there, and yet the olympic peninsula tribes over fish the crap out of their resources, but they also help boost the populations and fish quality there substantially. Nothing is so cut and dry, black or white, and everything is more complicated than anyone can convey or even perceive.

In all honesty, the only way to improve the situation is to realize our similar interests and work together as best we can to support our end goal: rivers so full of fish you can walk across their backs.

Sorry to target your post, but I've followed a little, gotten a little annoyed, and loosened my lips with a beer.

I'm stoked to try to go fishing later this week! I always strike out fishing salmon and steelhead tho.

Surely spoken by a transplant....
I now own a small ranch surrounded by, what you call, "Crappy soil".... What a stupid thing to say.
I am surrounded by some of the most beautiful (Tribal) land that is chock full of cougars, bear, deer, and also Columbia River frontage. Every time I go get my mail at the PO on the "Rez", I am so saddened by the yard after yard of junk, garbage, and (to me) unlivable homes. They have no utility bills, no taxes on their property, get quite big Casino payouts, yet live like that?
And before you draw your guns, my son is 1/4 Klamath. BUT... His grandpa (full blood) had a saying "If it's good enough for the White man, it's good enough for us". He never hunted on the Rez, and he refused to sign his kids up for the goodies associated with Tribal Enrollment. My son went to College on our dime, while ALL of his Indian school buddies quit when they started getting their big casino checks every month.

Now if you want to talk about getting screwed on land, that would be East of the Mississippi. Those Reservations are pathetic and worthless. In the PNW? Even the Umatilla Tribes got some of the choicest land in their Reservations....

Years ago before I retired from my home inspection biz, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla hired me to inspect govt provided tribal homes. In speaking to a few of the residents, I found out that the Feds inspect every year. Most all homes were in terrible condition, just neglected badly (ETA: roofs were shot, LP siding shot, floors and bath surrounds rotted out from neglected plumbing leaks, mold on the aluminum window panes, blankets over the windows causing mold on the windows even, etc). But the resident would ask me when it was going to get fixed. They said each year it was inspected, but nobody was ever sent to fix anything. The tribe had a few maint workers, but they didn't do those kind of repairs, and I guess it was expected that the white father in DC would send somebody. IDK, it was sad. I made $10k but told the tribe not to ask me to do it again.

BTW, too bad you decided to insult CRBMoA with your first comment. He is a Native American FYI and IDK if you have seen his other posts, but he is a good guy.

I think you misunderstood my post. All I was stating is treating any people as though they don't have the ability to help themselves puts them in a terrible position. Nothing deeper than that. Something akin to raising children as though they were as fragile as a crystal goblets.

Public housing, welfare, preference points, et al, don't really help POC. IMO it puts them in the status of pets that must be fed by the master, provides no incentive for personal responsibility and adult living, and traps people into a poor quality of life.

But this is a whole nuther discussion...

No, I got you. I should have quoted the post you quoted in that post, but who wants to fight about it.
I see the validity in your points.

Anybody had any luck? I've been out at least 10 times. Hooked one early in the season that jumped in the air and came off. Haven't seen a single Steelie in Jan or Feb.

Now with the snow I'm losing a precious weekend.

Where are you fishing? What river/ holes/runs? Tell me some stories?

Snow? Got to nut up friend! I remember fishing one day at the mouth of Clear Creek at The Carver boat launch. It snowed a couple inches while I was standing in water deep enough to freeze my peanuts. I was younger, maybe dumber then. That was also when we had a bunch more fish to catch too.

Is old my drift boat about four years ago. Haven't bought a license in two years, probably won't ever again.

Same for me. This is my third year not buying their BS tag that covers fish you can't fish for, and fish I'll never fish for. Sturgeon and Halibut. But I still have the boat. Not a drift boat, power boat. You drift boat guys really get screwed from what I hear. So many drifters on the waters that are left with fish. And people's rudeness and attitudes have changed for the worse in the last 20 years.

I have not been out once this season.
I bought a sled so I could fish the rivers again after a back injury ended my bank fishing days.
If WDFW wanted to target guides then the should have temporarily revoked their license and not penalized the handicapped.

good luck with the season.

I've been going mostly to the Wilson, sometimes the Sandy or Clack since I live close to them. I have found some absolutely beautiful water upriver from all the drift boats on the Wilson. Nice deep holes. I float the holes deep with a pink worm tipped with a live sand shrimp or salmon egg. If that doesn't work I try a nightmare jig. If that doesn't work I grab my bobber doggin rod and drift a 14mm soft bead. Sometimes I add yarn or egg clusters to the hook. If that doesn't work I swing the spinner and then the spoon.

All that gear is foreign to me! Drift fishing with the likes of okie, corkie, spin-n-glo, goey-bob, etc. W/yarn, seldom bait. These fish aren't eating when they're in fresh water for awhile. Some spinner when the water was too fast to drift. Warmer water is better for spinners. We would plunk the Nehalem when the water was high and colored.

I can't say for sure, but there was info sometime in the past of hatchery fish no longer being put high in the Wilson system. I know for a fact they did it with the summers. Therefore they imprint on water lower in the system and don't go as far up. Purportedly so hatchery fish wouldn't mix with wild fish. It was looked at by some that the state was doing it for the guides, being as they use drift boats so there's no reason to have fish higher than the highest ramp. Basically saying to hell with the bankies. Now I believe it's all brood stock.

Wow so I've been fishing where there's no fish?

like I said "I can't say for sure". You do ifish.net don't you? The handle seems familiar? There are some sharp minds there. You might pose the ? there. But then, those folks don't really want people joining their clan, like gun enthusiasts do. So you may hear crickets.

I'm out of the game in protest. So far I haven't noticed that anyone gives a crap though. I sold a butt-load of my gear and lures a couple of years ago. But I do enjoy helping someone getting into the steelhead game if I can.
