Washington is one of 11 states that have energetically complied with a three-year-old federal statute requiring states to provide the National Instant Check System (NICS) with the names of people who are mentally ill and thus disqualified from purchasing firearms.

Are vets who indicated they might be depressed or unhappy included in this list or is it only for those who have been found by a court of law to be mentally ill, or who are on mind altering prescriptions?

The klepto prescription thing was a hoot

If you see a psychologist for depression or other disorders you are not put on that list. The only way you end up on the list is if a court finds you mentally ill. If you committ a crime and go to jail and act really stupid and the judge says you need to be put on a 72 hour hold and finds you mentally ill then you will not be able to purchase a gun.

Just by going to a doctor doesn't put you on the list. See how rumors are spread. I agree with it as well. The guy at Virginia Tech said he was going to kill himself and acted crazy on campus and then campus police called the real police who put him iinto a hospital with a ward. When he got there he said he was kidding and walked out because they could not hold him and he went to court for other reasons and the judge saw all the complaints and issues that guy had and the judge did nothing and then look what happened.

This seems to be the case now, they just have to say that they've got mental problems or even some of the battle syndromes and the VA sends the names to NICS, or at least this is what the NRA and some vets are reporting.

You better check you statement out, they are in fact labeling those vets with some types of combat related syndromes as unstable and adding them to the NICS database. It's illegal but they're still doing it. The NRA has had articles about it and there is (as I remember) at least one lawsuit going.

Here's alink to one of the stories: <broken link removed>
