I just had unlimited paid time off thrust upon me at my day job instead of the usual 3 weeks vacation and week of sick leave which is about the standard. . I've heard of it before and have seen some goofy stuff in the workplace before but I don't know what to think about it.

A major agricultural chemical and fertilizer company just did the same thing. It's just a loophole for the company to not have to bank that vacation money. More than likely you will still only get 3 weeks approved

My general impression is that theyre doing it so they don't don't have to pay out people at the end of the year who don't take all their vacation allowance.

My son has it at his work. I told him it was probably a testing mechanism. Those who use a bunch, probably get the heave ho.

Precisely. It's also been proven that people on an unlimited system tend to take less PTO overall so your company is going to save oodles of money by shafting the employees. It's not a favorable system for workers.

^This. The software companies love this and I've heard the general feel is that people don't take the vacation.
 
Can you cash out any of those days? At my last job I could cash out vacation or personal absence days if I chose.
It can be great when you work for a place that does that. I have for all my time at the last place done so. Could cash out 120 hours each year. Since I get 280 a year made a nice bonus. We can also cash out any hours we have for "emergency" basis. Our sick time maxes out at 830 hours. That if you make it with the Co 20 years they will cash out 25% of that. So of course what tends to happen is when someone is going to leave they do a LOT of calling off to burn these hours. This will be the first year that I did not elect to cash out any of mine. Looking forward to all that time off.
