The Iliad and The Odyssey are both good reads.

A long time ago....in a barracks far away....
We had a snooty Captain who , when inspecting my room , spotted my book shelf.
He walks over....looks the over the books over and picks up my leather bound copy of The Iliad and The Odyssey....
And says , with a voice dripping with disdain....
"What are you doing with these Sergeant ...?

I go to the position of Attention and answer with the best parade ground manner and voice :
" I have found that when teaching officers to read...it is best to start with the classics , Sir. "

Totally worth the azz chewing my First Sergeant gave me later....
All while he was laughing at what I said....

My first CO was an elitist Peurto Rican who looked down at all other Latino nationalities, including my (at the time) Honduran wife that I managed to bring back after our deployment down there.... CPT Robles.... that balding Muddah Pluckah HATED me for doing that. He set my "career" back by at least 2-3 years, easily.

My first 1SG, Connell Delaney, and my first PLT SGT, SFG Larry Kaylor (who later became the TOP after I PCS'd) were two of THE best NCO's I ever served with.

My Dad was a Sergeant for 24 years (served for 28).

Then he retired, and the bastards ruined his entire reputation by giving him the retired rank of Captain. He never forgave them, and took that grudge to the grave...
