Some seizures will still continue - such has illegal firearms.

"Since 2008, thousands of local and state police agencies have made more than 55,000 seizures of cash and property worth $3 billion under a civil asset forfeiture program at the Justice Department called Equitable Sharing."

"Holder's decision allows some limited exceptions, including illegal firearms, ammunition, explosives and property associated with child pornography, a small fraction of the total. This would eliminate virtually all cash and vehicle seizures made by local and state police from the program."


I still can't believe this is coming from Holder.

The way I read it, when the FEDs do it, they will keep it, it just stops the locals.

According this Willamette Week article 1.9 million since 2001. It doesn't go out and say it but it sounds like they are taking advantage of the federal sharing that Holder has stopped, but this story lacks needed definition.

The "law" is a basic common law principle that has been around for millennia and is somewhat built into the constitution. So it isn't quite so easy to repeal (no law is easy to repeal).

Google "in rem" and "civil forfeiture". In US law these principles and laws have been there from the beginning.

It really picked up under Reagan and has been increasing exponentially since.

This is a really good thing. It is surprising the feds are doing this.

It looks like Oregon has already taken steps to rein in civil forfeiture:

It also seems that the authorities weren't pleased with the ballot measure.

My heart bleeds for the "authorities"

One of the main reasons I got out of the USCG was because they went from an org whose primary mission was search & rescue to one whose primary mission was drug law enforcement. This escalated with Reagan and the so-called "war on drugs".

The commissioned officers and up saw this as a chance to go from an org that had WWII hand me down equipment, a small budget and manpower that was smaller than the NYPD, to a real federal LE agency with all the budget and manpower they could handle.

Now they have state of the art equipment, a large budget, and they get to play cops and robbers.

They are also now under DHS.

I am glad I did not re-enlist, it turned out just the way I thought it would.

The feds often got a share of what the locals confiscated from what I understand, so it was more of a partnership than a competition. Maybe they decided they didn't want to share anymore. Not sure exactly why.
