The phrase "The Great American Novel" has been around for a while. The The Oxford Learner's Dictionary (OALD) defines such as:

Any novel that is regarded as having successfully represented an important time in US history or one that tells a story that is typical of America. Many US writers have tried to write such a book and I is the title of novels by William Carlos Williams (1923) and Philip Roth (1973). Books that are considered to deserve to be called 'the great American novel' include Huckleberry Finn, Gone with the Wind and The Grapes of Wrath.
Along those lines, what American firearm would you think would be the "great" of a given decade or similarly time period? Why? Any you feel are evocative of a given era, but hasn't garnered much attention?

1776-1880 (when they started fencing the west) Winchester 1873
1880-1911 Colt SAA
1911-1936 Colt 1911
1937-1963 Winchester Model 70
1964- Colt 1911

Great American novels, it's only Moby Dick and Blood Meridian. There is no third (for me at least).

The American Long Rifle....
Born in America at the tail end of the French and Indian War...
Fought in the American Revolution ...
As well as the War Of 1812...
Involved in our fur trade and westward expansion.

Here are three original American Long Rifles of mine :
A Tryon flintlock smooth rifle circa 1800 - 1830
A J.Henry Flintlock Long Rifle circa 1800 - 1820
A Henry Leman Long Rifle circa late 1830's - 1850's

Those are absolutely beautiful!

Remington 870 and S&W 38 specials, especially if you're looking at non-military America. Guessing you couldn't find a street in all the Midwest that didn't have a home(s) with at least one of those in it since they were developed.

American Long Rifle ( As Andy illustrates so beautifully), 1855 Colt Revolving Rifle, Colts New Model Army, Remingtons 1858, S&W Mod 10, Colts Walker series, Spencer's repeaters, Winchesters 1873, Sharps Falling block's, Winchesters 1895's, Remingtons Mod 8, Winchesters Mod 07. Schmidt & Rubin strait pull bolts, Enfield SMLE, Browning's Colt 1911 A-1, Mauser 98's, Remington Mod 721/722, Winchester Mod-54/70, Remington 870, Savage Mod 10 series, Sako/Tikka 85 and T-3 Short throw bolts!

Gotta give that title to either the 1911 or a Winchester Model 94.

Colt SAA. Made everyone an equal

Colt SAA
Winchester 94
Colt 1911
Remington 870
Colt AR15

These posts just about cover it, except that I'd add the Mossberg 500 series, and the Gatling Gun (the original hand cranked and modern motorized versions in all calibers).
