Really? Well, Alec MacGillis (the writer) thinks he's got the answer. Note that there is no mention of real PUNISHMENT as a deterrent. But IMHO..... it still makes for an interesting read.

Lack of swift consequences going all the way back to childhood, to overly permissive parenting and the whole "everyone is special and gets a trophy" philosophy as well as the "no discipline" philosophy of child rearing..... the article hits on only a small part.

Not to mention......the role that race, poverty, role models, education, jobs, family dynamics, etc..... etc..... You know, the other standard stuff when speaking of crime.

IMHO.....perhaps the author failed to mention the other factors. Because of another..... say/call it a different agenda or simply deflecting away from those "thorny and uncomfortable" issues.

YEP! No consequences for poor choices. Everyone has an excuse made for them. Yet one of the first things I read was its gun sales? They just could not wait to try to blame people buying guns for the high crime. Voters are getting what they asked for, hope they like it. If enough of them decide they have had enough? This can be changed but, again the voters who did this to themselves will have to decide they want change.
