If a 900 mile long 9.0+ hits, it could easily crash the entire grid in the United States.. and if that happens it'll take around 100 years to rebuild and it's likely that it never would/could be "rebuilt". Billions of lives will be lost.. fairly quickly. It'll be a close approximation of an extinction class asteroid hitting the planet.

Look at Bike Friday bikes. One of there touring models fits into a hard sided full size luggage case, then uses said case as a trailer.

...mind, I'm not a fan of 2 wheel trailers generally. Definitely not 2 wheel for use in the subject as we're discussing in this thread. Something like a BOB brand trailer would be perfect for a Bike Friday if your not into the whole panniers thing.

I prefer panniers actually, rather than one big duffle. A top zip duffle would be allrite I suppose, and they do make water proof ones of that type now a a days.

For the style of riding I used to do, an "Extra Wheel" trailer would be for us. Don't even know if they still make 'em or not.

It's a single full size wheeled trailer (either 700c or 26"), whichever you have built. THEN you have panniers attached to the trailer. Pretty keen actually, and gives you an extra full size wheel & tire in the event you thrash one, or want to rotate.

Cell service will be out very shortly after an event. In an earthquake, your best bet is to send a brief text message (data burst) and it should get through if you do it within 2 minutes. Every swinging dink in the world will pick up their cell phone and try and make a call at the same time which will take out the servers in a very short fashion. The AM phone portion even at 800 -900 mgHz with that much load will collapse, and in a best case scenario be restored in a few hours if power supply infrastructure is not lost and all you have is just a bunch of server / tower resets to do

Enter VHF or UHF ham radio on simplex operation on portable battery power.

I have a Watershed duffle and the small backpack and can attest there is good reason they make dry bags for the military. I'm seriously considering adding the Onyx PFD to my GHB

Lets say youve prepped, your house survived.... 3 or more weeks go by and others have run out of food, shelter heat, medicine. They are starving, some are dead....

And here you are with a workable home, healthy and obviously fine. The longer this goes on, the more you and your home stands out as the place to go for help...... But do you?


Keep in mind that other than not prepping, these are otherwise good people. His wife is dead or dying, his 3yr old is dead or dying, hes either coming to you to beg for help, or rob you. How much longer can your preps last till infrastructure is restored? What would you do?

A cheap "poor mans" or perhaps improvised way is to buy a good dry bag which would work as a flotation device, then also double as keeping your cheap backpack (GHB) contents dry too.

It would be a time to grow a back bone like a saw log.... Call me a silly optimist, but there are still resilient Americans out there. There will be unsung heroes and devils. That nerdy kid down the block that figures out a clean water supply or tells the city slickers...make charcoal, there's plenty of combustibles around, and empty plastic buckets....make multistage water filters....etc. Humanity has survived all kinds of Chit.... It'll be no picnic and hell on earth for many months. Good gardeners will be in high demand as will animal husbandry.

Koda, the link to the Onyx PFD is to the mfg website. It can be had from Amazon and others for about $80. Also, the Watershed and other submersible dry bags do provide flotation even when full of gear (except ammo...).

Be wary of inexpensive dry bags. I've spent a considerable amount of time rafting and kayaking only to learn that most "dry" bags aren't that dry, even when they're only getting splashed. That's why I only use Watershed now. It would suck to make a bad situation worse by falsely trusting a cheap dry bag, especially if you're relying on it for flotation...

Dive bags can some times be had at Salvation Army for good prices because a lot of people don't know what they are. We sold a couple on ebay a few years back at a 2,000 % profit.

I can speak to this SOME WHAT, based on the two events I got to be a part of. During Katrina, most people stayed put and they waited until things cleared up a bit, the looting and general lawlessness didn't happen right away, most were shell shocked AND nature played a huge amount in this situation, the flooding prevented a lot of serious crimes during the first few weeks ( In areas that saw the flooding) Those that went feral or were just looking to take advantage struck out once the big event had blown out and they were able to gather the gangs together! The Japan Earth Quake and Tidal waves was wholly different, the damage was so bad, and so many had been killed that general lawlessness was not such a big concern, but it did happen! The big difference ( besides the country) was even the people likely to go rouge were killed off leaving much fewer to do the looting or run amook! The looting that was observed was mainly for survival and not hoisting big screens and dvd players! One Huge difference we did see, in 'Murika, there were armed citizens that were able to fend off would be bad, where as in Japan, the crooks could pretty much run all over the people unchecked!
Japan should be the events being looked at as to just how bad it will likely get, and the death toll would likely be close enough for comparison! Watch some of the many videos of the quake and the flooding. Keep in mind that the entire stretch of the I-5 run from the Ashland to Tacoma will Liquefy the ground and that will make every thing really, really bad! Also keep in mind that there are a number of Dam's on both the Willamette and the Columbia that will suffer significant damage and this spells disaster on an epic scale! Fema will not be able to respond, local and regional teams will be completely over whelmed, and it will take several days or even weeks for outside help to arrive! and even then, your pretty much on your own!

Worst possible case, It were to happen right now! Take a look at how much rain fall and other moisture happening in Oregon and Washington, If an event like Japan were to hit right now, Game Over for a very large percent of the PNW!!!! It only matters where you are when the shaking stops and if you live that long, the real challenges happen after that! Sorry to paint such a gloomy picture! Preps had best be made for at least 30 days and probably 90 would be a more reasonable amount to expect, beyond that, your on your own for extended survival!

Bingo! The nails head finally hurts. This is what I prep for... And as far as money. Shoot my knife and hatchet are $200 if you want to survive you gotta put out.. it would be nice to have a gun but i may just settle for a tarp or teepee and some sharp pointy sticks. Get your laughs out..
