Back in the 90's there was a theory brought forth that "Shakespeare" was actually the pen name for a group of women writers and poets that lived around London.
During that time, women were not allowed to do such things as write plays (or at least have them published), but apparently there's some proof that small groups of women writers would meet, in secret, to encourage each other and talk about their latest stories.
It is believed that at least one group of these women writers decided to try and get their works published. After being turned down by a few male writers, they came up with the Nom de Plume of "William Shakespeare" and it worked.
One of the sub-theories that surround this one says that Anne Hathaway may have been one of those women writers.
