**UPDATE!!**
I wasn't happy with the red I got, and decided to go black instead. I first boiled it in clean water just to make sure no red leached out into the black dye, and I'm glad I did... the red came out all right and left an ugly eraser red/pink color...
so my guess is the rit dye will fade over time. This time, with a recommendation from BillM in the post above(#20), I went with the IDye Poly (has to say POLY!) in black. It's a lot better product for this application! I was able to find it at JoAnne Fabrics for just under $5. If you used RIT on yours and it worked great... but if it starts to fade, go get you some of that idye poly and do what I did. It should work much better.
