At last I have a running 6 cylinder again. The machinist found a broken exhaust spring on #5 cylinder. Replaced them all. Guides had wear but not much. Replaced them all just because. Grind valves and seats. No measurable warp so he did not resurface the head. $270 when all done. And it's firing on all 6.
 
Wait, so I'm confused. Didn't you just say you rebuilt the top end with new cam, etc while hunting this problem? And if so, the broken spring should have revealed itself then...
 
If the spark plugs won't spark
And the exhaust manifold doesn't exhaust and the,
Pistons won't...
Well you get the drift.
