I find myself in an interesting situation. I was shooting my Model 29 with hand loads today, and the firing pin hit the primer, but no ignition. The primer is mushroomed and won't allow the cylinder to rotate or eject. I was lightly using a plastic mallet to hit the cylinder, but that thing is stuck solid. Any idea how to get the cylinder open?

could the pin be stuck in the back of the primer ?

Well, if the primer went off and there was no powder charge, then you probably have the projectile stuck in the forcing cone, you will need to drive that back into the case before you can open the cylinder. Are you going to shoot his reloads again?

Primer didn't ignite at all, so as far as I can tell, the bullet is still completely intact.

Hit the back of the hammer with a dead blow hammer.. at the range.
I was going to try this at the range, it won't let the hammer drop enough to go through the firing pin hole.

if you don't have a projectile stuck in the forcing cone, check to see if the extractor rod is loose, it could be a right hand or left hand thread depending on when it was made

I can see the primer mushroomed, and it looks like it's locking it in place. But to make sure I try everything, is the extractor rod something I can tighten in the current state?

I'd probably put it in a vice, drop a dowel down the barrel and give it a tiny tap.. being all safe and stuff of course. It might reseat the primer enough to free it.

Seeing as it's a live primer as far as I'm concerned, maybe I'll try that at the range.

Did you give it a good whack? It may take two peope. One to push the cylinder release and one to give it a good whack.
I set it on a plastic table at the range, barrel pointing downrange of course, and tried whacking it, no dice.

Do you have a soft face dead blow hammer? Or even a plastic mallet.
Need to hold the latch in the open position and lightly tap on the cyclinder to open it up.
Make sure the fp isn't stuck in the spent primer.
