The fact that the queue is hovering right around 4-5 days before approval, around 2000 in the queue, for going on several months now, no way that is a coincidence. I hate to be that tin foil hat wearing guy, but there is just no way that the amount of buyers has just magically matched the number of approvals that can be completed for so long. IMO it is a way for them to implement a 'wait period', a law they would love to have on the books, but because it isnt yet here is their work around. They found out last year when the queue went to 40K, and per Oregon law FFLs started releasing after 3 days, that they had to limit it to around that time frame. So here we are. I am fortunate to always get instant approvals, but the couple of times I havent it has been due to entry error.

PS- we live in a crazy time right now, where suddenly SUPPRESSOR approvals are coming back FASTER than Oregon NICS gun approvals. So i have just pivoted to buying suppressors for now- just got my SEVENTH can, all completed in under 3 days from start to finish!
Man the change in suppressor times has been a godsend. I had been putting off a 9mm can due to possibility of moving. I just didn't want to risk a 10 month wait. But now that risk is pretty much gone for individual transfers. The American suppressor association or whoever it was that worked out this change with ATF are to be commended!

There was a Willamette Weekly article last year talking about a lawsuit from a former state police BGC worker, who was suing for unlawful termination and unsafe working conditions.
He was a whistle-blower also but he said that there is a big billboard sign in the BGC main office that says "DENY and DELAY, think always deny and delay".

I can't find where he said it but it was a reddit or some online forum where he was claiming several stuff about the firearms background check unit.

https://www.wweek.com/news/courts/2024/01/31/fired-state-trooper-files-lawsuit-accusing-oregon-state-police-of-covering-up-widespread-misconduct/#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20lawsuit%2C%20Kendoll,.%E2%80%9D%20He's%20demanding%20$8%20million.

he said various stuff about how it's done and if fun owners really found out what was happening, the whole thing will collapse and we would be better off just giving it to the FBi.

My Tuesday morning weekly conspiracy theory is that the state and DOJ knows the state police is incompetent and they are hiding it.

Whait, you're actually suggesting that a government agency is incompetent? I've never heard of such a thing!

None whatsoever...

When I go to Coastal Farm & Ranch I always get instant approval. Keith's Sporting goods is 50% instant approval.
Sportsman's Warehouse is 25% Instant approval. I believe it's the person who enters the info more than anything. The guy at Coastal bragged that he usually gets instant approval for gun sales. Sometimes they don't have the gun I want and have to go elsewhere

Surprised at the 50% for kieths, I woudl think it woudl be lower. I will never walk in there again as long as I live. There is a 16 page thread about bad experiences with Kieths.

I think there's more than one of those threads. :s0140:

Oh man I hadn't even thought about Keith's in years. I guess I must have wiped them from my consciousness after that nonsense in 2020 with the signup sheet in order to get customer service (you could be the only customer in the shop, but if you didn't sign the list, you'd be ignored). Are they still doing that?

They have the sign in sheet. Doesn't bother me. They have a big selection to look at. I go in expecting to see the gun I came there for. They do need to update to tablets for the background check though. Still doing that on paper

I can believe this. My last purchase, at Tick Licker Firearms-Corvallis, I messed up the form in two places because of insufficient info on the form. For example, they apparently only accept a specific format for the date, but don't tell you the format they want. The clerk handling transaction went through the form in detail and caught the two spots that would have sabotaged me. So I got instant approval. A less knowledgeable or less careful clerk would have missed it.

Sign-up sheet for service? Interesting. Sometimes some people--women for example--claim they cant get service at a given gun store. That the clerks will spend all day talking with people who are just hanging around or wait until a male customer comes in before they they break off talking with the guy hanger ons and pay attention to the gun coUnter again.. Then after the male customer has left or bought what he wants, they go back to talking with the hangers around as if the female customer was invisible. Never had that problem myself. But then, a woman who goes directly to the big bore revolver section and starts staring lovingly at one like it just tried to seduce her tends to be noticed. (It did. One of them always does. They whisper sweet everything's at me from way before I reach the gun counter. And if I told you what they say, I'd end up banned.) But if it is a problem in some stores or with some clerks, the signup sheet could make it much harder for the clerk to discriminate against customers of the "wrong" gender, race, age, or apparent lack of affluence without it being much more obvious to customer, gun counter clerk himself, and gun store owner what was happening. Might also help gun store clerk by making it more obvious who is just there to bs and who actually intends to buy something.

The intent of the sign up sheet made some sense when it was first instituted. In 2020 there was a lot of panic buying, long lines out of the door, etc. Lots of gun shops were busy madhouses. The sheet was intended to make sure everyone got service in order, and if you came in just to browse prices and didn't necessarily need service you wouldn't take up time ahead of someone who did want/need service. The problem is they kept this practice long after it was at all necessary and stuck to it even in situations where you were the only person at the store. Sort of a letter of the law vs intent type situation.

I could see it being as a way to assure certain people aren't ignored by staff but I guess my attitude has always been that if I need help I'll just ask for it. I guess I don't see why it's any better to sign up on a sheet than to just say to an employee, "Excuse me, I have a question about such and such."

my most relaxed buying experiences are at Coastal farm and ranch. I just learned to not go any earlier in the day than noon if I intended to but a firearm. Earlier than that and you probably will only be able to buy ammo and accessories. The persons allowed to sell firearms don't start early in the day.

The male clerk can turn away and ignore your question if he doesn't like your gender, race, age, or apparent level of affluence. The paper doesnt. And it constitutes a written record that proves it if someone has been discriminated against.
