PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The state Board of Higher Education is expected to approve a new policy Friday that would ban guns on Oregon's seven university campuses.

A court decision in September upheld the right of students and faculty with concealed weapons permits to bear arms. But it also said the board has authority to control its property.

The Oregonian reports ( <broken link removed> ) the new policy would require people to agree not to carry guns if they wanted to do any business on university property -- as a student, professor, employee, contractor, sports fan or visitor to any event on campus. There would be exceptions for police and military programs.

The Oregon Firearms Education Foundation says it's watching to see how the policy plays out before deciding whether to sue.

Not surprised. It doesn't sound like they're planning on preventing people from carrying on campus grounds who are just wondering around and not going to a class or event.

Wonder what recourse they'll have with visitors. Tell them to leave? That threat sure works with alcohol at football games. :s0114::s0114:

That's exactly what I said last night when I saw this on the news. How big of a problem are they having with CHL permit holders causing problems on campus that they need to regulate this.

It has nothing to do with CHL holders causing problems, because they aren't. What this is about is they were breaking the law by denying law abiding citizens and CHL holders their legal right to carry on campus. Someone called them on it, and the courts slapped their peepees.

This is about them trying to find a way around the court's decision. Same thing DC and Chicago did after they got their peepees slapped.

12 Minutes to respond at Virginia Tech, just long enough for him to kill 32 people and himself...Good thing he wasn't allowed to have a gun on campus!

Well don't just TALK about it dammit! DO something! Write to your senator RIGHT NOW and tell them NO ON SB 1594! You can do it right here: <broken link removed>

This is no longer only a potential OUS policy change but an active bill to change the ORS.

SB 1594 was the last minute backstab by Peter Courtney at the demand of Ginny Burdick. This bill is essentially the same as her SB 1550 which would make you a criminal if you took responsibility for protecting yourself or others on “school property.” This has been one of the most shameful abuses of the process we have ever seen.

The bill was essentially recreated this morning and heard this afternoon with no opportunity for public input. And make no mistake. That was the point.

The bill was passed out of committee on a party-line vote with Ginny Burdick, Dianne Rosenbaum and Lee Beyer, all Democrats, voting to make schools “criminal-safe” zones and Ted Ferrioli and Jason Atkinson voting “no." No public testimony was allowed on this bill either. None . The bills now move to the Senate floor where it is unclear when they will be heard. It could be tomorrow or Thursday.

Please contact your State Senator and tell them in no uncertain terms NO on SB 1594. You can use this link even if you do not know who your Senator is.

Short and sweet. "NO ON SB 1594"

So the schools wont do business unless you agree to their policy......How about everybody don't do business with the school until the board changes their mind....boycott the schools.....boycott the schools....boycott the schools. It would take a massive state wide movement, not just a half-a$$ effort.

Just stop them from using funds from state tax payers since they dont want to abide our rights as citizens. If it is private property then they should not get tax money.
