File the round lead part down flat to the copper jacket?
I think it will work. Filing the lead down could make it like a poor mans HP? But taking a little off the top looks like a probability.

Its close to larger calibers (357, 10mm, 44 mag, etc.) hunting ammo.

It will work. Here's a photo of my 10mm soft point round from Federal ammo. The flat edge might still catch bone enough to break thru though not as well as a true hardcast flat nose or solid like the extreme penetrator. IMO a soft point should mushroom and penetrate deeper than a hollowpoint but not as deep as a solid/hardcast, better suited for deer hunting or cougar protection.

I carry these for cougar protection but for bear protection I would carry a non expanding penetrator like a hardcast or an extreme penetrator.... especially if I was carrying a 9mm, IMO 9mm is not even close to 357,10,44 etc... go for best penetration.
