Elk and cost effective I would go with a 30-06.
Thanks for the feedback @SKrueger any models you have in mind? This guys sure does look like fun..
Long Range 30-06 Semi-Auto Assassin
Do you agree with Krueger on the Hunting vs WROL approach? I wanna get 10k down range in whatever I settle into for my tactical rig. With that said I bet it gets real expensive real quick hauling through 30-06No elk in the world is going to survive a 180 grain Partition through the lungs.
To be fair, though, I've been in on 4 bulls (two of them mine) that fell to well-placed bullets from a 7mm-08, ranging from 68 yards to 407 yards. 6x5, 5x5 (and a big one he was), 4x4, and spike. None traveled more than 90 feet before tipping over.

It's where you shoot them that matters.

Thanks @etrain16 It's more of a consolidation than anything, or at least that's what I'm telling myself. My buddy is now telling me to keep the m4 I have and train with that. Pick up a 30.06 for the Elk.
Have any thoughts?
I just sold my 30-06 to a buddy. I have two rifles in .308 which with good shot placement will drop an Elk.
Both would do the job.
