"She wants me to educate her kids in what gun fire sounds like, how guns can be used safely or dangerously, and what to do if they find themselves in the unthinkablesituation of the school in Florida"

That's going to be quite a challenge if you are dealing with a 6, 4, and 1 yr old

Maybe the six year old...but the other two? That is a lot to put on them at that age.

I first picked up a loaded gun when I was 8. I think it totally comes down to the kid and the teacher. The teacher has a lot of responsibility here.

Follow your instincts and start with talking to them. I know some kids who would get scared just watching a gun get fired. Good luck my friend your going to need it.

All realky good advice guys; thanks. I was thinking about working my way up to the pellet gun with the 6 year old, so that is likely how I go AFTER he masters the basics.

I agree the 4 year od and 1 year old are too small to teach much more than how to hide, although I realky like the backpack/book idea.

My daughter (mom) got exposed to guns at a very, very early age. My wife and I used to take her to the local trap club and take turns watching her in her car seat while the other shot. She also went pheasant hunting and elk hunting with me when she was older and when I took her and her husband to the range awhile back, she outshot him pretty badly :p:D So none of this gun stuff is new to her; I think she's just panicking a bit realizing there are crazies out there who will take her kids from her if they can... She already lost one in a miscarriage, so that thought is probably opening some raw wounds.

Some people are comforted by math, showing that it is statistically unlikely may help. Then showing them what they can do to further reduce chances with education. I think illogical fear is a very present danger currently. But then I kinda do that sort of mental/statistical processing for a living. Don't let fear win, have a plan is what I tell people.. easier said then done I suppose

... what would you do or are you doing for educating youngsters in this new world reality we are dealing with where you don't know when someone is going to pull a gun out in your school, movie theater, or shopping mall? ...

One thing that surprised me from the FL shooting, is a video taken from inside a classroom. Many of the kids were just sitting on the floor in the open. Some lessons on taking cover would be a good idea. Include topics such as barrier selection (a plastic seat isn't cover). It could be turned into a fun hide-n-seek type game.

IMO the 6yr old is the only one old enough to speak to about any of this. Mom should answer any questions about what happened in FL but with limited info.

The kids safety while in school is up to the teachers. The parents need to find out if there is training for the teachers and what the plan is. The child need to be instructed to follow the teachers commands in an emergency. Hey, we had atomic bomb drills when I was in school. After awhile it's just another school thing.

My kids also learned what a gun sounded like because I took my family when I went shooting. No mystery there. My oldest girl wasn't interested in guns, my boy got a bb gun when he was mature enough, the youngest girl liked to shoot too. I helped them shoot my .22 rifle but wouldn't let them handle any of my handguns til much older.

You can't always go by what a gun sounds like. Especially for young children. They are at the mercy of the teachers. Bloomberg should have used that $250k he sent to Oregon anti-gun money, to send teachers for a day of tactical and evasion training.

When seconds count bad decisions are deadly. knowing the abilities between hand guns and rifles can be easily demonstrated and really make a difference in mind set. Instead of thinking, oh my God I am going to die. Think, how can I survive.

I think i would introduce the oldest to an old-fashioned bb gun. You learn about death when you kill your first bird or squirrel. Then progress to a cricket 22. It will take time. I really think that the four year old and definitely the one year old is too young. You might want to teach the mother as well.
My dad would never let us have a B.B. gun. He thought that they promoted the idea that guns were not lethal and there quietness encouraged getting in trouble around the neighborhood. We had real guns, even the recoil of a shotgun encourages the idea of the power they wield.

Dad wouldn't let me have a bb gun because we lived in a suburban neighborhood and he thought it wasn't appropriate. Never mind that we had foothills just across the RR tracks. Anyway, my best friends folks let the kids have bb guns... my buddy and I shot up some snakes, a junk car back window, birds, bums on the train, each other... (we made forts up in the walnut trees and staged sniper wars) hmmm, dad was right!! LOL

If you want your kids to know guns are lethal, help them hold a shotgun and shoot a watermelon from about 3' away. :eek:o_O Serious! The melon is completely gone and the goop is everywhere!!!! Yucky!

I killed my first deer at 12 with a single shot 20 gauge. It was a small buck but I was sire prod that day. I felt a little sorry for that buck I always feel a little sorry about killing an animal but it sure ate well. People don't seem to understand that for an animal to survive it must do a lot of eating and that translates into killing wether it's grass or a beef steer

I think people over think this whole area.

Firearms are a tool that Police, and families use to protect our communities
Some times people use tools the wrong way and people get hurt.

I have tools in my garage that are far worse then a Firearm, when I was a kid in the 60's cops came in an
educated us on firearms and there were target classes as well. Now they teach fear not education.

To answer how would you teach a kid to ride a bike, or use a hammer same thing exactly.
There dangers of using a bike and a hammer hell there is danger with cell phones in the bathtub.

One would NOT go to a kid and say each year 1000 children are killed on bicycles holly crap kids would never
ride one.

EDIT:
Not mad at you OP if it sounds like it I am " not " pissed off, irritated at how this whole freakin mess is and it makes zero
sense. Its piece of metal that sends projectiles at objects. Its not a death machine its just a tool nothing more nothing less.
Sorry OP my typo came out wrong.. my apologies.

20,000 people died in passenger vehicle accidents in 2015.

I think around a 100 people have been murdered in these school shootings since Columbine.

Both of these happenings would be horrible to deal with on a personal level. My question:
Is she as afraid of driving as she is a school shooting?

The other thing I have to say about this topic is maybe she should home school them if they can swing that financially. Teach and protect them herself. I say that as a parent who plans to do it.
