I moved from Oregon's largest tent encampment and Marxist haven last summer. Have posted in this threads about it.

After returning from the DMV, I got home, walked inside and loudly announced to the Mrs, "I love Idaho!" It took 15 minutes, I timed it, to register/title my truck. The staff were friendly, polite and efficient. I repeated the process the next day with our 2nd vehicle with the same result. Had the same experience getting an ID drivers license. I love Idaho.

Last vehicle I had to register and title in Oregon in 2019 took 5 hours of waiting and 30 minutes with the most surly public servant I ever encountered.

I settled in the Treasure Valley and love being in Idaho. Wish I could have convinced Mrs to move sooner but.... While Boise may be Idaho's most liberal city I see plenty of signs of conservativeness in towns like Meridian, Star, Eagle, Emmett, Nampa, Caldwell, etc.

Traffic, to me, is nothing compared Moscow on the Willamette. At 530 pm on a week day I84 near Meridian has less traffic than 6am on I 205.

We saved $1400 a year on car insurance alone by moving.

Not everyone who moves to Idaho is a socialist, I'm one example of a fellow conservative who moved, bringing those values along with a new voter card. Got 2 friends just like me who are plotting their escape from Washington's socialist paradise. Come on over, it's a great place to be free. 😊

That was EXACTLY what happened to me 15 years ago. I went to the Gem Co. dmv and there were 2 people working and 1 other person waiting there. It was 15 minutes total from start to finish. At the time all 4 of my vehicles and 2 motorcycles were $200 to register for the year. Its now about $300 but still a bargain. Our auto/homeowners insurance is half what it was in Ca.Funny thing my motorcycle ins. here is slightly more. Was told its because Idaho is a helmet optional state! Ha! Property tax, in my county, is very, very, very reasonable. Property taxes in Idaho are generally low except for Ada and Canyon Co. in the Boise area.Dont know about other areas but DO know Haley/Sun Valley is high too. My friends, who lives in Canyon Co. west of Boise pays twice what I do and home his home is valued about $200K less than mine. There is a lot of development in the Treasure Valley and MANY new schools, fire dept.'s LE offices etc so Canyon and Ada Co. have a bunch of bond measures on their tax assessments. The rural Co.'s, with way less population not so much. Any way it sucks here stay where you are!!!

I just stumbled across this thread so I'm a bit late to the conversation.

I'm retired so not tied to a job.
I am sick of Oregon politics, not just the anti gun crowd, but the moral issues as well.
I had high hopes last election but we still ended up with an extreme left governor.
I have been looking at Idaho and Montana. Looks like Montana is approaching half blue and half red while Idaho is about 1/4 blue 3/4 red.

So I have focused on Idaho. The Boise area has grown very fast over the last decade or so and seems quite blue. So I have focused on the Lewiston area. Spent a week there last month looking it over and checking out the real-estate market with an agent. Prices are high, but they are here too.
I hear about the paper mill smell but didn't notice it while we were there. I will be there again next month so maybe it will smell more in the heat.
We found the people there quite friendly and after talking with the agent he says I will fit in quite well with the local conservative culture.

I have no firm plans yet so am open to discussion on locations (rural Idaho) and any information that can be provided on Lewiston specifically.
I am a vet and mid 60s so would like to be near medical facilities as I age, healthy so far. I visited the VA clinic while there so that is good.

My daughter and her young family will be moving wherever we go within a year or so. So they need jobs and quality schools for the grandkids.
Here in Oregon the oldest (5) will be starting in a private school this year to avoid Oregon public indoctrination.

Thanks in advance!

If you like Lewiston look further east Orofino. Or even north to Moscow.
There's some really small towns east and kinda south of Moscow.
Back road types of places. In beautiful canyons.
Still within an hour or so Moscow/Lewiston areas.

I really like Moscow. It's dry. But still has evergreen trees. So when the dead of summer hits its not just different shades of sun baked yellow and brown.

I liked Moscow too till I found out the politics are very similar to its namesake in Russia! We always say that Moscow, Boise North End and Haley is where all the blueheads in Idaho are!!! Id steer clear of any of these. East of Moscow and Lewiston are better choices if work is not required or you can work from home OR if your in a high demand field= health care! My wife and I were both in healthcare, way back when, and those areas HAD opportunity or an ability to work in Moscow/Lewiston and commute out east. We like the Orofino/Kamiah corridor on the Clearwater very much.

I would love to live in the Orofino area since I like remote areas. But the wife would never go for being that far out.

We need to be a short drive from the grandkids who will be living in Lewiston if we move there.
Right now my daughter and her husband (and grandkids) live in Hillsboro and we are on the North coast. (They will be moving to where we settle in)
Almost a two hour drive on a good day. Add in tourists or winter weather on the coast range and the drive sux.

We are looking on the East and southeast side of Lewiston. Small acreages yet still close in.
Headed up that way again in June to look it over some more.

I like Orofino.
If I were to settle that far away I'd head towards Riggins and or the White Bird Grade area.
Remote. Big. Rugged. Beautiful. Country.
And from what I understand there is some good hunting in the area.

Riggins /WhiteBird area is kinda remote.Really hot in the Summer if that matters. Where would you shop? Grangeville? Kinda Limited for sure. I DO like the River though. There is very good hunting up in Seven Devils area too. Hospital in Lewiston? I dont think there is much medical care in Grangeville. McCall has a small Hospital too.
