We used to hold a gold rush for boy scouts to get an area cleaned up.

trash and such is gold. When a kid brings some in, he gets paid in gold rush cash. At the end of the cleanup, the kids use their cash to bid on donated prizes. This can be a big deal with camping or just a day sort of thing.
Lo's of fun. You can even have indians attack the prospectors with squirt guns....
