It depends on who is wearing the "man purse/satchel". I'm sure a lot of guys in San Fran could pull it off but not me. On the other hand if you want to talk about garter holsters....

I look like every other Doctor/Lawyer/College student walking around with a bag.

subcompact .380 goes in wallet attached to my belt so it never physically leaves my person.

If that makes me look gay to some people, i'm okay with that. Most people look at my bag and would never guess it has a bunch of edc type gear in there.
