Dear Jim,
The certified ballot title for IP 43 has been issued! The title is "Prohibits 'assault weapons' (defined), 'large capacity magazines' (defined), unless registered. Criminal penalties."
We are pleased with the title because it more accurately reflects the intent of the petition which is to save lives by reducing the number of assault weapons and large capacity ammunition magazines in Oregon. The original title incorrectly led people to believe that possession of assault weapons legally owned before the bill took effect would be criminalized. Gun owners may keep legally owned items described in IP 43 as long as the items are registered. Sales or transfers of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines will be prohited after the law goes into effect.
Signature gathering still must wait until all court challenges are cleared. That might not happen until late June.
In the meantime, we are training thousands of volunteers to gather signatures so we can gather the necessary 100,000 (and more!) signatures need by July 6.
If you are interested in attending (or organizing) a training in your community, please sign up at this link for the IP 43 "Lift Every Voice" campaign.
The next training events in Portland will be held on May 30 at noon and again at 7 PM. You only need to attend one training session. The location is Augustana Lutheran Church, at the corner of NE Knott and NE 15th Street in Portland.
A training is also scheduled for Bend on June 20 at 7 PM. Trainings are also being organized in Astoria, Newport, Ashland, Medford, Corvallis, Hood River, and Eugene.
Our window of time to place IP 43 on the November 2018 ballot might be small but the energy and excitement around this issue is exactly what we need! Can we gather 100,000 signatures in one or two weeks? YES, WE CAN!
