Not naive, just statistics. I've read many articles about bank robberies over the years, and I don't recall ever reading one where the robbers shot the employees after getting what they wanted. I can't say that I disagree with what Autozone did. Everything worked out fine this time, but it could've been a totally different outcome. If you are going to stop shopping at stores because of their policies regarding employees and handguns, you're going to have a very, very short list.
It's not about the everyday policy. It's about the fact that these morons can't seem to differentiate between an employee simply carrying while on the clock, and an employee who responded correctly to an emergency. "Necessity" is a defense for almost every offense under the law. It was "necessary" for this employee to violate the stupid policy in order to save his supervisor's life (potentially). This "zero tolerance" cr*p has got to stop. If people in management positions want to have zero tolerance policies so that they don't have to exercise any judgement in the performance of their duties then fine, any minimum wage drone can read a flow chart for decision making, so pay them what they are worth, minimum wage. Same goes for school administrators and any other management people who are afraid to make a decision on their own.
