The CATO institute just released an interactive map that details various aspects of freedom for all 50 states. You can select from several categories as well as an overall rating. If you click on a state additional information will be displayed specific to that state.

This is really worth a look see especially if you are looking to relocate to greener/freer pastures.

How free is your state?

Note the Gun Freedom rankings:
Idaho 18th
Washington 19th
Oregon 26th

Note there is even more pending gun control in Washington, Oregon, and California

I'm not so sure about their rankings;

Idaho, with constitutional carry (for residents), Concealed Weapons License issued to non-residents and no requirement for BGC on private sales, is #18,

yet Colorado, with magazine restrictions, BGC on all private sales, Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP) costs $152.50, CHP is only available to residents and no open carry or State Preemption in the states largest city and a so-called "assault weapons" ban in the same city, is #13.

I don't understand that, am I missing something?

Cato Institute ain't exactly "the media". It's a libertarian think tank, although an inside-the-beltway one, with all that implies.

I worked on the spreadsheet for Jason Soren's Free State Project, digging into all the laws we could find to decide what state was most free (looking only at the 10 states lowest in population). Our spreadsheet allowed the user to weigh the factors most important to him, so the results depended on your preferences, but the top states were New Hampshire, Wyoming and South Dakota in most peoples' preferences. So Cato is not that far off.

It is a very tough job to make such estimations.

I felt pretty free when I was living in Wyoming, although I was not smoking pot (which would have made a different outcome) and there were just too many cops for my taste, at least in some towns. At least they would wave at you though.o_O The bad news about Wyoming was an out of control legislature, spending like a drunk sailor on all sorts of fascist and socialist programs. Just like most places. Having a permanent R majority did not affect their behavior in this respect.
