I just use the ones with the big rubber treads/tracks that are made for stairs. Harbor freight sells them. They work good. Keep grease on the treads so they slide.
 
Someone posted a tri-wheeled hand truck on one of the threads (Ultimate Thread Drift???) here recently that I thought was pretty cool.
 
I rented on like in the OP and was severely disappointed in its performance while moving two safes. If the stair treads aren't a standard size then it is pretty unstable and required almost as much muscle to move as without it.
 
I thought this was going to be about exercise equipment. I was going to reply with the a stair stepper works at my house is you dust it, hang xmas stockings on it, then after a few years give it away...
