While I've never been a HAM radio operator or have used the GMRS systems, it's interesting subject matter nonetheless as most of my work revolves around the 800 MHz trunking radio systems used for Fire/EMS/LE etc.

I can get into the repeater in La Pine, but not good enough for useful audio...should be able to short hop on 40, 80, and 160m

It was at an 8 hour 'HAM cram' session with the local HAM group in LaPine.

Are you sure it's the 145.470 Walker Mtn repeater? Or are you possibly using a local PeakNet repeater which links to the 140 PeakNet repeater which is also on Walker Mtn.

If it's the 470 repeater try giving me a call this evening.

I can talk into the Corvallis repeater, east to LaGrande, north to Wenatchee, and south into Bend.

Like I said, I can break squelch on the LA Pine 470 repeater, just don't have any audio with it...but can hear lightly hear people talk. Once I get the beam up, I should be able to reliably get into it.

It was a little messy on the band...static crashes and all., but we powered through.

There may be some shortages due to the lack of chips etc, but for the most part radios seem to be in stock.

And considering all I have is about a 150' dipole made out of 75 ohm TV coax !

I'll be working on something different soon - most likely a longer dipole made out of MIG welding wire - surprisingly it works well as I have been told.

If you have the room, look up the Extended Double Zepp design.

It's 5/8 wave per each leg vs 1/2 wave, amd will tune on every band...160m - 6m

I cut mine for 40m, so is approx 175ft total, and have it up about 40 feet.
