Any chance your old friends name is Roy?At yesterday's gun show in Redmond (OR), I met a friend who deals mostly in pieces/parts. After a bit talking (shooting the sh_t) I noticed a older style AR upper on his table.
End result, a nearly complete / nearly correct M16A1 upper !!! SCORE !!!
Yeah, the slip ring is kinda odd; more angled than a regular A2 ring, and it had one of those rare big knob FA's. The birdcage is definately A1, with slots all around.Looks like an A2 delt-ring on it, and can't quite tell if that's an A1 or A2 birdcage. I've been issued M16A1's that had round and "teardrop" FA "knobs".
Yes Sir, my friend's name is Roy.Any chance your old friends name is Roy?
Same here. Every time I see one, I get the mental image of a line of soldiers running single file and chanting "Hut...hut...hut...hut...hut.........."Man, that A1 sure brings back some memories….

Could be. I don't know. I'd just prefer to put a 'correct' one in place. The big knob FA is going to be replaced with a standard teardrop. Then, adding a BCG will complete the upper.Could the delta ring have been one of those armorer rebuilds
I'm related, he's a good person.Yeah, the slip ring is kinda odd; more angled than a regular A2 ring, and it had one of those rare big knob FA's. The birdcage is definately A1, with slots all around.

He's done good by me, that's for sure.I'm related, he's a good person.
It's amazing how small the world is. I'll be sure to ask about the book. We're technically not related anymore due to a divorce but we kept him instead, LOLHe's done good by me, that's for sure.
Next time you see him, ask Roy about the book he has on diving on the USS Arizona; I'm the author.
Something interesting here; it appears that the delta ring is plastic. I've been doing some investigating on this and have found other instances where plastic deltas were found on military rifles by active duty troopers doing inspections. So basically, this upper is a bit of an odd bird. Nothing sketchie, just different. I'm now suspecting it was an A1 / A2 transition model.Could the delta ring have been one of those armorer rebuilds
