Not quite true. The NRA was established to teach marksmanship after the Civil War by Col. Church. He decided the Confederate soldiers were better marksman than Union solders so he form the NRA to teach marksmanship to ex-Union solders. They did however setup programs in the south to teach blacks how to shoot.

Ken Hutcherson was also part of the group standing. He used to (perhaps still do) be the pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Kirkland, WA. I used to enjoy his services as it was always entertaining. He's a strong supporter of traditional marriages and is often interviewed by the news media whenever the issue comes up.
