It is to the government's advantage to have prepared citizens? Now that one was worth a belly laugh, thanks for that one. What is sad is that people here should be much more aware of things than the general populace of sheep. So what does that say about the general populace? Lemmings and drones. It doesn't really matter much though. It will just slowly decay into a cesspool at this point. All one can hope for is borrowed time.

To AM products.. yes many of the jonny come lately preppers are just fearful sheeple, but many of us, especially the old timers, are dead serious and sane. And yes I am ready to kill to protect me and mine regardless of the circumstances

I don't doubt the sanity of preppers, however, preppers like everyone else have a tendency to fall into a level of group think that is both dangerous and counterproductive. The fact that you're "ready to kill to protect me and mine regardless of the circumstances" is no sign of deep thought. In fact nearly every multi-celled organism is capable of the same.

What I am trying to convey, is you need to think bigger, would you kill to protect your neighbor? Would you kill to protect your town? Answering those questions should be easy, the more difficult one, would you die to protect any of these?

Whether we like it or not, we owe a debt to the society that has given us the freedom to be "preppers" and "independent thinkers", we pay back that debt by acting in defense of our fellow citizens, whether that means educating others, or being prepared to use those guns to stop a crime and defend a fellow citizen. If you arn't willing to do these things, then civilization has already ended.

I am ready to answer to my Maker for what I have done in the way of helping others.. all I have said here is my wife and my life come first.. no, I have decided I would likely not voluntarily die for most strangers, except in a general revolution

I used to think like you about this but outgrew it. We are talking going against a rifle with a pistol, not too bright. I am not voluntarily going against a rifle wielding nut with a pistol if I can get out of the way. Now as I have said here before I do pack a mini 14 and lots of 30/40 rd mags in my trunk just in case I can deal with the situation with an equal chance. But even that is a risk since a CCW person or cop may think I am the whackjob spree shooter

As far as society, the majority of this nation are fools and traitors.. the original contract has been broken by them and tyranny reigns. I owe those sorts nothing, absolutely nothing

I use to think way as well, and I still lend a helping hand I have my pickups plenty of times to pull out other vehicles in snow or mud.

But as far as a major event or shtf situation I owe the lazy, blook sucking leaches of our society nothing absolutely nothing.

The problem with this thread is that only the extremes are being represented.

I don't want to give too much away....but suffice it to say that there are plenty of people who you don't hear from too often who are in your midst who have things pretty much squared away for themselves.....and a bit for community charity as well. These people are competent to hold down good jobs, have robust, happy families, go on vacations and generally enjoy life while SOMEHOW maintaining the ability to be self reliant for months at a time.

These people don't go on T.V. and don't go around prosthelytizing to their neighbors, friends and co-workers But I assure you that they are quietly, confidently and compassionately present in your everyday lives....

For the "prove it" crowd, I find it difficult to understand why one would have to prove it to justify preparing for difficult times. Any thinking person with a reasonable level of common sense can look at recent history and the present state of the US economy and governmental spending across all fronts and deduce it cannot be sustained. It is impossible to continually spend more than one takes in. Since roughly 1980, with the brief exception of the mid to late 90s, significantly more has been spent by the government than has been taken in.

Since 2000, the spending has accelerated dramatically - with deficit spending exceeding 1 TRILLION dollars each of the last several years with projections into the future showing the large deficits continuing.

I doesn't take a genius or a Phd in economics to recognize it will stop at some point in time. When, you require in order for one to justify their "preps"? That is not knowable. All will be fine, until it isn't. That's as close of an answer as you'll get - other than to say it's closer now than it was.

I read a very wise post in another forum that applies to nearly every circumstance - "I prepare in an effort to minimize the amount of income I need for the rest of my life. The less income I need, the less I will depend on outside sources for both survival and a comfortable life."

I would submit anyone who does not prep on some level is the crazy one. Isn't it amazing that over time "saving for a rainy day" has turned into a selfish mentality. The blogger who is a .gov paid employee in disaster preparedness should tell you all you need to know about the governments desire for the citizenry to be self-reliant.

I owe no "debt to society." Isn't that the term used to describe punishing a criminal? I have not been found guilty of any offence against the King's peace. Why should I expose myself to the malice of the Legal Industry to save a man who won't see to his own security? Guess I must be a sexist pig because I feel like I should come to the aid of womyn (there - not a sexist pig) and chillrun afflicted by knaves and brigands. Men who are effete, attached to the idea of the Normality Paradigm, or detached from reality do not merit my placing myself in physical or legal peril.

I served 4 year active duty army, 2 yrs army reserve and 6 yrs air national guard and work for free as a reserve police officer. I have put my arse on the line more times than i can remember to save the lives of others in the line of duty. So has every able bodied person in family served for our countries and for the lazy, ignorant worthless scumbags freedom to spit on the flag I have defended.

I risked my arse for scum bags in pretty state sate office and the offices of DC to sit back and to tell me that I do not deserve what I have and that worthless lazy ignorant entitlement trash can have opportunities I did not and that I have to pay for it.

I have worked my arse off all of my life, there are times to where I went to beg hungry rather than sign up food stamps because I did not want that addiction.

Civilization is not taking peter to paul, or telling me it us to me to pay for pedofile to have satellite tv in prison, or to allow the Obama's to fly around the world on my dime, civilization is not running off at the mouth talking about crap you know nothing about just because stupid liberal professional student turned professor told you so. No civilzation is everyone taking responsibility for their own actions and paying for own debts.

Not you or anyone else has the right to talk trash to people who you know nothing about, nor what they have done to insure that their family is safe and relatives are safe.

No I do not owe you, nor do I owe 99.9% of the people on this planet a thing, nor does anyone owe me anything either, your attitude that people owe someone or society something is what so screwed about this world. The attitude that oh well I can what I want and someone will come along and rescue is center around your argument and that is why our country is as screwed up as it is, I am responsible for my actions just like everyone else, if I do something stupid and I am hurt in the process it is my fought and I am the one who has to pay, not society, not my neighbor. I have heard your argument before it was usually by someone who had ran up bills and filed bankruptcy and was released of the debt when they should been forced to work their arses off until it was paid regardless of how much they had to sacrifice.

If you truely believe civilization is socialism do yourself a favor and live in the heart of old china in the middle of socialism, maybe then your eyes will be opened.

Maybe we are crazy, it's just different perspectives based on whose doing the judging. I've tried to plant seeds over the years, use examples of happenings all over the world, talking to people about having the basics set aside. I don't push too hard but They definitely know where I stand on things. I'd say most folks in the last 5 years are respectful and won't out & out say you're crazy and I try not to come across that way, I have friends that do come across that way so I'm concious of how it sounds. I've worked retail sales at a local home improvement center down here in lane county for almost 17 years, so I get to talk to a bunch of people, and for about the first 10 years folks weren't talking about this kinda stuff (prepping, survivalism, natural disasters)I'll say now in the last 4 or 5 years I could have a conversation with folks a couple times a day. Whereas 5 years ago it would have been maybe 1 or 2 a week. It's pretty easy to get peole talking. They'll say "boy this is expensive" or "things sure are getting expensive" and then I'm in. I guess in the end I really don't care too much what folks are thinking about me though I do wish the best for them and theirs.
