Makes me wonder what the defender's decision making process was... he had his kids with him and was exiting the restaurant when the shooter rushed in... take the kids and run to the car, or engage the shooter and risk the kids?

I've heard the man and son were early shooting victims and dad only returned fire after being wounded, so I'm pretty sure his thought process was just what he did, "I'm gonna kill this m'er f'er."

That actually makes a bit more sense.

If I was departing with my kids, I'd be thinking to get them to safety before any other thought crossed my mind. But being hit early on makes much more sense, then it's completely self defense.

Its simple really, that poor man didnt deserve to be shot to death. We dont know what his life was like. What if he came from a broken home or something....
