Sailing songs

Bottom line first: I need the five best sailing songs and movies of all time. Bear with me:

So in about a week my step-daughter (14) is coming to visit, and being put shortly into sailing camp/training. She actually requested this, not me driving it. As incongruous as that sounds, it's actually true. As an ex historian/navy/sailor, I actually felt my heart skip a beat or maybe as many as four when she asked for sailing instruction. I decided right away not to rig a mast on my outboard cuddy cabin like I was tempted to do. Instead I decided to get her some competitive professional dinghy training, which they do in spades is this town. (Gig Harbor).

My main contribution will be to put all my enthusiasm aside (I have raced a lot of one-designs on the Chesapeake, done a Bermuda Race, Block Island, almost missed my own HS graduation because I was becalmed off Caledesi Island in Fla., etc.). I will just try to set the tone by teaching a song and showing a movie each day of the five-day course. She and I listen to music, watch movies and discuss them together all the time, so this will not be suspicious. At least at first. That means I have to distill down the best five sailing songs and sailing movies of all time. This is where you peeps come in to cross-check me. I am thinking:

Songs:
1. Southern Cross / CSN. If you need directions on how to steer to Tahiti, this is all you need (Lol, OK, maybe that plus 80' of waterline):

2. Spanish Ladies / Traditional but best is by the Longest Johns. If you need to get your inner warrior on, as well as navigate the English channel and anchor in the Downs, here's all you need to know (ok, maybe you also need a 60 fathom lead-line, some wax, and to know what a shank painter is):

3. Brandy / Looking Glass (I was once within inches of being fired from a ski instructor job at Snoqualmie Pass because of this song, but that's a different story):

4. Sloop John B / Traditional folk but Beach Boys: (Also my name is John B so suck on that Brian Wilson). This is the original promotional video from the '60s, which is both horrifying and terrible.

5. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald / LoL do I need to explain - if I do then go to another thread you poser, ring that bell 29 times:

Honorable Mention but not quite:

- The Downeaster Alexa / Billy Joel (his daughter's name is Alexa and a lot of his boats are named for her):

- Ballad of the Yarmouth Castle / by El Gordo (it was his Fitzgerald "study song":

Notable mentions but utter failures. I will not actively link these as to do so would be a crime against culture (these are to be suppressed and never mentioned again):

A. Orinoco Flow (Enya)
B. Valparaiso (Sting)
C. Anything by Jimmy Buffet
D. Any song with "Sailing" in the title, but they don't turn the wheel or looking to windward (Blatant T.S. Eliot reference there, I admit)

NOW FOR MOVIES:

Now for Evening entertainment, I am thinking Sailing movies:

1. Wind (1992, Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey)
2. In Harm's Way (1965, John Wayne and Kirk Douglas - God, I love this movie, even have it on dvd)
3. Hunt for Red October (no explanation necessary)
4. White Squall (1996, Jeff Bridges - Ridley Scott directed it)
5. Kon Tiki (2012, foreign stuff but still good)

Bonus Points: Titanic, Jaws, "Weekend Sailor" (this one is about the Mexican amateurs who one the first Whitbread round-the-world race in 1974. Fantastic documentary, btw. In fact, I need to bump it into the top five and drop something. watch it if you like sailing and haven't seen it:

"Master and Commander" would be a contender, except I'm a big Patrick O'Brien fan. To anyone who has read the books, that movie is a living and walking abortion, as much as I do like Peter Weller (RoboCop - he produced and directed it).

(I already bought a "Jaws" t-shirt for her to wear at sailing camp, plus the pirate themed ones I gave her in the past)

I figure after this sailing immersion week she will want to either join the Navy or move to Iowa. Either outcome is OK; I served my purpose by providing career guidance.

Sailing porn because why not (I took this pic myself c. 1995):

How in TF did I knot know about that song?

It also explains succinctly why I am planning to sail to Colombia eventually…

will not be sharing that with my teenage step-daughter, though. Maybe we could ask Kid Rock to do a sailing/boat song. That would be bomb.
