Explain Leupold Series to me?

Can someone explain to me all the different series and what they mean?

Is the freedom line the same as the older VX1 or VX2?

I'm not sure what they all mean and if the 1 is way worse than the 2 or 3?

I have a VX2 3-9x50 that isn't made anymore and would love a second or equivalent. If the VX3 is worth the extra money I'd consider that too.

Is there comparable $300-600 Vortex scopes or others. I really like the clarity on the Leupold though. I'm sort of stuck on a simple duplex for this rifle too.
