The internet has raised the general consciousness about all things collectible or of value. As a result, the pickings at garage sales, also in general, have declined. There are still some rubes around who don't know about such things, but they are far fewer. At least in my experience. Even the Goodwill puts their better donations up for auction online now.

I once bought a Smith & Wesson Model 1917 .45 ACP revolver at a garage sale for $25. I don't expect to make another such find, no matter how many garage sales I might go to.

Another good score was a Leopold LER scope for $1. I think you're more apt to get a score on a scope or some other accessory than a gun. Because it's less identifiable to laymen.
