Got the usual Fossil deer i hunt LoneRock and the my Fossil Elk been up there over 40 years .
First time in over 40 years will not be able to hunt.
They closed the hole unit tell Dec 31 due to the fire , I lost deer camp and my elk camp due to the fires , the rancher I know lost his ranch land and now his woods .
So looking back into over the counter blues lol disabled and have not been there in over 40 years so we will see what happens .

I've just come to the realization I'll never draw a bighorn
That may just be a blessing in disguise. I had an uncle that pulled one some 30yrs ago. He ended up pulling down on a real nice one, squeezed one off and dropped it right it in it's tracks.

He goes hiking up after it, get's within a few dozen yards and darned it that thing didn't jump back up and went waddling right over a small saddle in the hill. The last thing he saw was the sheeps rear end waddling back and forth... then it was gone!

Turns out.. what he did was shatter one side of the sheeps horns clean off. Musta knocked it out or stunned it enough for it to drop then came to when he got in closer.

He's NEVER lived that one down!! Earned him the nickname, "little big horn" and he's been ridden hard over it relentlessly ever since. At one time he tried to embrace it in an effort to shut us up by renaming his ranch "little big horn". Yeah, that didn't work.

Every hunt camp it always comes up and typically starts out something like, "Hey Jim! Tell us about that time a big horn told you to kiss his a**!"

He's vowed to outlive us all though. He lives in fear that "Here lies Little Big Horn. Kiss my A**" is going to make it's way onto his tombstone.

He ain't wrong... 🤣

Is all of umatilla forest closed down or just fossil as of now. Will Heppner be effected as well and closed down till end of December ?

Finally, after 24 years of trying, I drew a Hart Mountain Antelope tag. I have never been there and no time to scout so currently trying to locate a guide. Any leads would be appreciated.

I drew a mule deer tag. I'm not planning on using a guide, but I did receive an email with an attached letter telling me the following:

Commercial hunting guides are permitted to assist you with your hunt on the Refuge, but they
must receive a Special Use Permit from the Refuge Manager. If you desire to use a commercial
guide, contact the Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Services Manager,
Jamie Bertram at [email protected] and ask for the list of approved guides.

If you're hunting on the refuge, I'm surprised you didn't receive the same communications I did from Josh Loew, a Wildlife Refuge Specialist at Hart Mountain NAR.

@oregonjoker If you don't know already, there is a large fire (Warner Peak Fire) burning at Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge that started a couple of days ago. I just saw a Facebook post on the Oregon Fires 2024 page indicating the fire will impact the antelope and deer hunting, indicating folks should contact ODFW at (541) 883-5732 for more information. They have already closed a couple of the main campgrounds and several roads.

Edit 8/8: Fire went from estimated 2,000 to 4,000 acres on 8/6 to 17,400 acres.
Edit 8/11 Now 43,225 acres and the HMNAR is basically shut down.

Very fortunate this year.

I will have another busy season as 1 of my son's friends is starting his hunting career with us.
We have multiple bears to kill in the fall.
The boys have to decide if they are taking points or exercising their youth first hunt right for elk.

Last year I was blessed to spend 34 days in the field. This year I'm hoping it's similar. It rejuvenates my soul and refills my tolerance for the rest of life.

Honestly, there's more story to this tag that I won't share publicly.

Its like winning the lottery for myself this year.

I've set a few goals for it. Some of which are circumstantial.
Its going to be a fun hunt.
Ill be in the area next weekend rafting then camping.
Optics are going with.

I already have a Ram on my list to find to see if he survived the winter.
If so, he needs to make it to that 3rd season so I can bring him home.

Congratulations! Im hoping someday I will get mine

Skunked in Oregon for 6 failed tags over two years; worthless to pay for a hunting license and come up with zero. Recent trip to the Blue Mountains: it appears that the voters have compromised the wildlife ecosystem, with advancing lion and wolf populations decimating deer and elk herds.
