That's pretty much what I do. I agree your EDC should be shot regularly to fine tune proficiency and ensure reliable function, but there is some merit in maintaining an EDC that is broken in yet still "fresh" and with little risk of component failure. IE., When you really need it is not the time to discover your recoil spring has lost too much of it's mojo. It'd be a good idea to have two of your primary weapon that are exactly alike, a high mileage/ range gun to abuse and then a proven, lower count one.

And everything else.. if you shoot a gun enough it's surprising what breaks and then needs replaced and or repaired. That's pretty much what I do. The gun I carry the most is not the gun I shoot the most. I have about 2500 - 3000 rounds through the carry gun, I have target guns with 5 -6 times that. How often do you shoot and train with the gun you regularly carry? That is if you truly carry every day.
I see a lot of guns in the classifieds that will have a description along the lines of, "Carried for X amount of time but has seen very little rounds." Shouldn't it be the gun you have the most rounds through? Or am I the odd ball out on this one.....
I've also witnessed that. Whether it be courses or quals. Individuals will go the entire course with a full size or compact gun just to go home and stick a tiny pistol they rarely shoot in their pocket. Heck, I have buddies who i'll go shoot with and they wont touch their micro pistol cause they hate shooting it but love to carry it. Some individuals can run smaller guns very effectively but that takes some serious time behind the gun. If you can do it I am jealous. I'd love to carry a tiny gun simply for the comfort aspect. With that said I take carrying a gun as a serious responsibility and I personally know that I would be a liability if I carried something that I wasn't proficient with simply for comfort. I need to ensure I am going to hit what I am shooting at. Others lives may depend on it.I carry a J frame every day. It is not the gun I shoot best, its the one that carries best. I put in a little extra time at the range to keep up the skill.
After years of annual quals I'm never surprised at who can't. People that should know better!
While we are on this subject, I have seen lots of guys qual with a full-size gun and then drop a pocket size gun in their carry holster. DR
I don't have particularly deep pockets, but I did just that. I have two identical P365s in case one goes down and needs to go out for service or I actually have to use it and it goes to a police locker hotel. Now if a person had deep pockets, it might be nice to buy two identical guns and make one your range gun and one your carry gun.
The J frame is about the smallest gun I can shoot well. I can shoot it well to just past 20 yds. Thats the point my eyesight becomes the limiting factor. Anything beyond that I need the bigger sights, and longer sight radius and my glasses on. But inside that 20 yds I can shoot it very well. DRI've also witnessed that. Whether it be courses or quals. You should try shint bullets. That's lint with a bit of other sh!t in it. They are twice as effective as your standard pocket lint bullet.I shoot every gun I own every week except my carry gun because I really, really like surprises and pocket lint bullets
For some reason I get this mental vision of your edc and it being uniquely intimidating .............I shoot my carry gun.
How often...not as much as I would like...but often enough that I can still hit what I want to with it...and keep in practice with things like magazine changes , clearing a stoppage , etc....
What this looks like for someone else ...should be different.
Since they need to shoot well enough for their situation...and not mine.
I would suggest that someone shoot and practice with their carry gun so that actions with it become second nature.
That however..takes time ...and practice.

While I do enjoy shooting my Wheel lock pistol....For some reason I get this mental vision of your edc and it being uniquely intimidating .............
