Took delivery on my first M1 rifle yesterday. Pretty happy with what I got.

Springfield Armory receiver with a 5.9 million serial number which should land about 1956 year of mfg. Barrel is 11/55 and also Springfield so about a 95% chance that this is the the original barrel.

The rifle went through an arsenal at least once, possibly twice. It now has a WW2 Winchester hammer and 1955 International Harvester stock. Most everything else is Springfield.

Congratulations. I also got a 1956 this year. I think 1957 was the last year for Garands.

CMP is the most affordable way to own a significant piece of American military history. If I had the money and the space I'd have a safe full of CMP Garands.

P.S...........The trigger group is Springfield Armory but is either pre-war or early war. April 1941 - August 1942. However, it also sports a W.R.A. hammer from a later arsenal re-work. The stock is 1955 International Harvester and obviously not the original.

Everything else appears to be original Springfield Armory on the upper end dating to 1955-56. Barrel is SA Nov. 1955. Receiver is early 1956. Operating rod has a drawing number correct for that time frame and is also SA. SA bolt is correct for mid '50s production. I'm beginning to think that most of the rifle is original and unmolested from later arsenal rebuilds.

That is an example of the better CMP service grades. Lately, I have seen many unused arsenal rebuilds coming from CMP. Is the receiver leg marked from arsenal rebuild?

The cartouches behind the heel are probably rack markings.

Nice looking rifle you got a good one. Should be a good shooter with the +1 muzzle reading.
Lots of good info here.
Dang Ron! Thanks for that web site! Took me about 15 seconds to ID my stock as IH. But then I haven't taken my new to me service grade to THE man yet to tell me about it.
I'll be getting lost in that site for awhile.
