Are you capable of making a 200 yard shot to a 1/2" or less target with iron sights using an M1?

I hit 4 consecutive 1" piano key targets at ~150 yards, that were laid out in a 10 feet per side diamond pattern with a scoped .308 Tikka T3 from a bipod and bag at a rifle match.

I thought that was pretty swell.

I shoot a 200 yard off hand match every month. some scoped some open sights. The X ring is about 1". My average is about 3 of 10 touching that X ring.
But off a stable bench with my varmint rifle and its 36X scope 1" is doable. DR

Well a dime is .705 inches in diameter. So are you asking if a shot can be made at 200 yards on an object smaller than a dime with iron sights?

I can't even see something that small with my naked eye at 200 yards. So no I am not going to claim to be able to make that shot. Maybe if I have a bigger item/picture to correlate where I need to hit. But a stand alone object that is smaller than a dime. Nope. Unless I am misunderstanding your question.

half inch with an M1 and iron sights is so specific its not even practical to judge. Nobody can even see a half inch dot at 200yds and the front sight would have to be like razor thin to even sight on it.

I seem to remember something about focusing your eye to basically zoom to longer ranges within iron sights, but if you yourself couldn't do that in the Corps with iron sighted M16 models? :s0092: maybe it's just some people could and most can't?

Edit. I know I am slightly nearsighted (that reminds me I need to make an eye doctor appointment to confirm the acuity and also ask about astigmatism)

There should be a checkbox for "OH HELL NO!"

ONE QUARTER M.O.A. with IRON SIGHTS?

:s0002:
I don;t know how you guys can do that. I don;t know how my son does some of the things he does with his guns. He's a Combat Vet and is used to shooting moving targets while he is running around.

The best I've been able to do with open sights is about 1 1/2 inches at 100 yards with my 22, M&P 15-22. All 25 shots within a circle the size of the bottom of a bathroom Dixie cup, but a half inch high and a half inch right of the X ring. At that distance, the X ring is the same width in my sight picture as my front sight post.

This^^

I'm much better then an average shooter but I'm no Olympian nor is my naked eye sight that good anymore.

Could I hit that with numerous rifles I do actually own…. Probably more often then not or maybe about half and half but there are so many variables that I wouldn't place a bet on it.

I can hit an 8" plate with a rifle built for it at 1000 yards off a rest and that same rifle will have touching holes on paper at 300 yards but that bottoms the scope out so I'd have to guesstimate 200 yards with it.

I'm not really understanding the point of the question…

The intention for the rifle in the OP question wasn't aiming at eyeballs, they were shooting noggins would be my guess.

Speaking only for myself here....

I don't worry 'bout numbers or the size of the target...
I just focus on hitting the target...that is what matters...the rest...is just numbers and such...
Again.....practice with your rifle...a lot...practice so where and how you shoot is damn near muscle memory.
You will be surprised at the things you hit ..if you practice that often.

GEEZER SHOOTING TIPS

When shooting out to 200 yds, with iron sights, its recommended that you always carry one of those tiny golf score card pencils to pre-poke a couple of holes of an appropriate size while walking out to place the target. Those pencils are all darn liars,….. so nobody will suspect you.

Or

If your insurance covers it, get some 16x bifocals? ( you may need to say they're for driving)

We shot out to 500 meters with iron sights. The closest distance we qualified was 200 meters. With that said we were never shooting dime sized targets. At 500 meters the front sight post would cover the entire target.

Recruits nowadays qual with Acogs. They don't even get taught iron sights anymore. Sadly.

With that said I'm not going to claim to shoot dime sized objects with iron sights at 200 yards. I can't shoot what I can't see.

Ya , I can cover that target with a M1 .... next question . ;)
