Some good glass is always good. I'd think used on a birding forum.. a grand or two will get you some supreme glass and those people don't generally abuse their equipment.
I'd get some binoculars over a spotting scope if you can only have one. You can always mount the binoculars to a stand/tripod if you desire.

Well, I already have the new Swarovski 10x42 binocs.
I was thinking Swarovski spotter, but the cabelas(Meopta) is better glass in my opinion.
I was also liking the sig sauer TSX 1911.

go to the gun library and acquire something wonderful that is going to appreciate in value while you shoot it and care for it. Your 2500 will beat any bank rate or stock market investment.
A decent Winchester 1886 comes to mind, or a Pre-64 Model 70.

I'd get an 1895 Winchester lever action in 30-06. Don't know what they cost though.
