Has anyone ever seen or shot the Winchester 55 single shot .22? It's a unique little gun. I've had one sitting around for years but am finally going to get around to shooting it today.
That's the truth!!

Winchester's other Model 55, the semi-auto single-shot. A semi-auto, but no magazine. Not a self-loader, but only a self-ejector.

I remember them and have seen a few when they were new.

Going from old memory, this was when 22 scopes were becoming common but this rifle was a top loader and ejector.

Neat rifle for sure....at one time while an uncommon sight at a gun shop or show...it was fairly inexpensive.
Nowadays it is even more uncommon...and expensive.

How much do they go for these days?

I plan on teaching my oldest how to shoot with it. But if it's worth anything I may trade it for something a little more common.

Like any firearm.....
The price will vary wildly from location ... timing...and gun guys being shall we say fickle and frugal....
Last one I saw at a local show...was sold for around $350 ..it was in decent shape and had a excellent bore.

If it was my rifle...I'd keep it...especially if it has a good bore.

Yeah good point. Might be better to hang on to it. Now my Winchester 94 is a different story… that's chambered in .32 Winchester sp and I'm almost considering trading that one because ammo is so dang hard to find for it. Unlike the model 55 in 22.

I hear you on the .32 Winchester....
I would consider keeping that 94 however...they don't make 'em like they used to.
Maybe save some pennies...and buy ammo as a one time bulk deal / expense...

Dad owned one bought new in 58 or 59. I grew up learning to shoot with it. In my opinion one of the safest rifles to learn with.

Some years back I tracked one down and purchased it. Its a pretty nice sample and shoots extremely well. The draw back for some is the lack of being able to mount a scope.

The reason they are so rare was that due to a very high cost for a single shot sales sucked and Winchester discontinued them after a couple years. Dad said it cost as much as Winchester repeaters when new.

I've never owned one or fired one. Before following a couple links, I wouldn't have known one if I tripped over it. A neat little piece of firearms history though. A bit "gimmicky"? Maybe.

I would note that since it fires from an open bolt dad told us not to dry fire it except before putting it away. To reduce the frequency.

Auto eject. Fires from open bolt. Bottom eject (usually down your sleeve). Loading gate is plastic and prone to breakage. Aluminum replacements can be found but difficult.

Great beginner rifle
