Speaking only for myself here....

The value of this Winchester lies not in a dollar amount.
But in the fact that it is a pre-64 / pre-war Model 70 that is is in excellent shape...
And begs to be taken out hunting and shooting.
To be used...and appreciated for the workmanship that went into its making.

Could not agree more. The number of firearms I own are in the triple digits, I am not a collector. They all get out to the range. My inquiry began when a good friend asked about a hunting rifle.I knew I had the perfect gun for him.

IIRC, there is a local shop with three pre-64 Model 70's in 30-06, with prices from about $800 to $1000. Still there after several months. I think one is pre-war.

Conclusion: the information provided, publicly and privately was very educational and helpful. My friend now owns a beautiful hunting rifle. It has sentimental value to me so I am glad I will be able to see it go to good use.

Again thanks to all, truly appreciated!

That is a beautiful pre-64 pre-WW2 model and one can use a clip to load the ammo (pre-WW2 models are considered the most desirable for collectors). Unfortunately, these days it is near-impossible to sell any rifle at a fair price (fair both to seller and buyer). You are better off to hold on it unless you are willing to sell it dirt cheap. I recently listed a custom Tikka Tac A1 for $1,200 (sub 1/2 MOA beast) and only got two low-ballers. One offered $300 and one $400. I did not even bother to reply their messages. I personally would be ashamed to make such low-ball offers to sellers.
I also have Win 70 Pre-64 in 30-06 (mine is in the about same condition as yours). 1.5 MOA accuracy is standard for these rifles. Anything under 2 MOA for these old pre-64 models is considered accurate (plenty accurate for hunting within 300 yards). Many (especially younger people) consider 30-06 to be inferior to newer calibers. I consider 30-06 and Mauser 8mm best hunting calibers since they can be used for hunting anything, from dear to brown bears. If I had to have just one rifle, I would chose my Win 70 pre-64 in 30-06.

Good Luck and Wish You All The Best!!

The last new Model 70 I bought was $1600. It needed some correction. '' New gun Lotto ''.

Keep in mind that any used gun purchase is playing the '' Used Gun Lotto '' The effects of which increase in direct proportion to the guns age and desirability.

With this in mind. And not putting my hands and eye's on this specific gun?

Pre-64 model 70's are wonderful rifles....however...
Lately they haven't commanded the high prices they have had in the past....
At least where I live.

Ya i am with Andy. Price has definitely come down on the pre 64s(seems like on all older guns), the guys that really appreciate them are getting old and giving up hunting and collecting or dieing off.
There are definite price trends of used guns. Sometimes certain categories will spike, then decline. I've noticed the same thing with some collector vehicles. I agree that there is a generational component to this. The collector mentality is often driven by nostalgia, which dies out with generations.

Unfortunately, these days it is near-impossible to sell any rifle at a fair price (fair both to seller and buyer).
I blame some of that on the mass market "hunting" rifles that the manufacturers are churning out now. Mostly black plastic stocked things from Ruger, Savage, Tikka, Remington 783 and others. Also there is a general decline in hunting in the US.

The rifle in the OP shows a lot of handling on the stock. I'd hate to estimate the number of animals to it's credit over the course of time since 1941.

I like the Win. Model 70 design. I can't remember a time when I haven't had at least one around.

Thank you, growing up in the Midwest I know that model 70 provided many dinners. I have never considered it's use prior to my family's adoption of the model 70. Appreciated
