This is pretty much where I am. Late 20s and all. The beautiful thing with this arrangement is we don't all have to agree. It actually allows for different viewpoints. The key principles are personal responsibility, and non-interference/removal of/from government in things it shouldn't be involved in anyway. Its encouraging to know there are more of us out there.

Hey I'm an old goat in my 60's and it pretty much expresses my point of view also! Patrick Caddell (Democrat pollster) in my view nails it when he says (paraphrasing) that Washington (both major parties) and the elites, especially the elite media, have turned against the people in favor of their own selfish interests or their sick desire to control the rest of us. There's a reason five of the richest counties in America surround Washington, D.C. There are individual exceptions from both parties to what I've said above, but there aren't enough of them to make a difference yet.

Those of us who care about liberty need to be looking out for one another's rights and supporting those who do because the people with power don't give a rip about our rights.

Five pages in and not a straightforward answer yet.

That's because a "pro-gun liberal" is about as useful to preserving the 2A as a clown with an air horn is useful on an elk hunt.

Again, I don't think anyone has identified themselves as a liberal. I vote for moderate democrats sometimes. I know there were two of us who said who we are likely to vote for.

I think the usefulness of a pro-gun liberal lies in the fact that if we tell them to sod off, they become an anti-gun liberal. I would say that is worse for the 2nd Amendment.

I was just doing my taxes today, and I noticed something I think I overlooked before. There is a "DC first time home-buyer exemption". The exemption lasts for a 5-year period. Now, how many "first-time" home buyers do you think there are in DC? Well I looked into it and it turns out that there are probably quite a few: if you don't own a primary residence in DC for one year, you can qualify for this tax exemption. But you can take your primary residence, list it as a rental property for one year while residing out of area or in another rental property, and you will automatically re-qualify for the exemption on the purchase of a new primary residence. Then, sell your rental property, and repeat the process every few years. This way you can completely avoid paying any property taxes to own a home in DC.

Nice.

edit: and the 5-year exemption is PERFECT for anyone moving to the DC area for a 4-year term. Live there with no property taxes for your whole term. Get re-elected? Buy another place. No taxes. The exemption applies to apartments or condos as well, so you don't have to find a house to qualify in urban-dense DC.

I beg to differ - I gave a direct yes-or-no (or undecided) answer to every level of representation I will vote on in 2014.

Wether you like it or not, Oregon is now pretty safely "Liberal Democrat". If pro-gun liberals aren't encouraged, where does that leave gun rights? If conservatives just dismiss the possibility of liberals and/or Democrats being pro-gun, and manage to convince the Democratic Party itself of this fact, that will drive all the pro-gun folks out of the Democratic Party - but it still won't give the Republican Party a majority.

The simple truth is: Most people don't care that much about gun rights. Most Portlanders aren't "rabidly anti-gun", they are people who have never touched a gun, and don't really care one way or the other - their opinion comes solely from hearing the most vocal on the two extremes. Most rural Oregonians only care about basic home defense, mostly against animals not people. According to a recent poll, 65% of "rural Republicans" (a self-identification,) owned firearms. That means 45% of what is commonly considered a "key gun-owning demographic" do *NOT* own guns.

Gun rights have been sharply politicized for years. There are Democrats who are for gun control for no other reason than "the Republicans are against it." And likewise, Republicans who are for gun rights solely because "the Democrats are against it." If we perpetuate this idiotic myth, we just reinforce it, and it becomes self-fulfilling.

If the GOP would start selecting moderate candidates that are not offensive on almost every other level besides gun-control I would have no problem voting republican. If they keep nominating people that call the POTUS a Kenyan, want to give the wealthy a free ride, and tell women that god wanted them to get raped they will continue to be un-electable in my eyes.

The GOP is in a failure mode right now due to several issues

They have (Reagan, anyone?) caved on the illegal invasion and added more anti American voters

They caved on waves of 3rd world immigrants (1964 immigration act) who have no clue what the 2nd Amendment even is, these tend to vote demorat

Repubs have nominated "moderates" (sell outs) that my lady and I would NEVER vote for

Come on PP, that's like saying I'd vote for a lib candidate "if" they weren't trying to grab my guns , they weren't murdering babies, they weren't turning this country into a "socialistic paradise "....:s0112:

I love these surveys that like to point out their conclusion that gun ownership has gone down. Heck I don't even always tell my wife when I buy a new gun and we've been married 40 years. I sure as h - ll wouldn't tell some random survey and especially a medical health care or government one. Back before the 1970'sshooting maybe people were more trusting of the Government. Now many people on both sides realize the people running our States and Country are not to be trusted. The Libs will vote how they want. We'll have to see how it affects who's in office next time.v

This is perhaps the most idiotic post I have read on this site.. care to amend it? BTW I am not a Republican, I am a revolutionary

While his statement was embellished a bit, it's not that far off. The GOP has an image of being anti-women, anti-minorities, anti-poor, anti-liberty (with the exception of guns), and anti-anti-religion.

Contrast that with the Democrats who show an image of pro women's rights, pro minority's rights, pro helping the poor, and not pushing religious values on everyone.

In the end there's little real difference between the two parties, but image matters, and the Republican image is killing them. They keep rolling out whack-jobs like Santorum and limp-dicks like Romney, then shove their good candidates like Huntsman back into the closet and throw away the key.

Whatever your thoughts on Obama are, he's a great politician. I remember visiting a restaurant during the election season who was running their own little straw vote, they had lifesize cardboard cutouts of Obama and Romney next to each other and the difference was striking. Obama looked like a personable guy with a genuine smile. Romney looked like a robot. His smile was forced, his bearing was stiff. He looked exactly like a world-wide conglomerate CEO who hadn't lived in the real world for twenty years trying to be nice to a working stiff. Perception is huge.

Huntsman was the only Republican candidate with a real chance of beating him and as soon as he dropped out I knew that Obama had it in the bag. The sad thing is that the Republicans haven't changed yet, and if they don't change then the same thing will happen next time. They'll wheel out their douchbag and freak show, and the Democrats will win again.

....but something that I still can not fathom is how the party that supports the life of the unborn child in one breath can so swiftly support the death sentence... defies all logic.

Not at all... those who choose to murder an adult person capable of self defense deserve nothing like what a baby killer deserves

Most everybody would agree with that statement, whether pro-life or pro-choice. The debate is about when "human life" starts. Many pro-lifers (but not all) say it starts when the egg is fertilized (why not when the sperm or egg is created?). Pro-choicers pick any number of points, all having good arguments. Personally I haven't really decided, but I don't think it starts before the distinct "human" EEG pattern in the brain can be detected, which happens around the start of the third trimester. Interestingly enough, that's also the generally accepted end of human life, when that same EEG pattern can no longer be detected. Fits pretty well in my mind.

You can use me as a target, I voted for Obama and would do so again versus Romeny. My reasons have been posted in other threads. I honestly was hoping that there would have been a better candidate for election than Romney. I disliked Obama and hated Romney. I am a person that believes that gun control is not the answer and believe in the death penalty - I also served for 13+ years of active duty. I believe in the simple principle that you get out of lfe what you are willing to work for. I have no idea what a food stamp looks like and have only been on unemployment when I got out of the service over 20 years ago. I want less people to be killed with firearms but the solution is not the gun. The solution is controlling who is behind the gun. I hope and pray that the republicans start paying attention to the average American and puts forth a better candidate. I will vote for a republican when I feel that they are in sync with my beliefs. Guns are important to me but the 2A is only one right that is stated in the constitution. I may be a registered democrat but I will vote my conscience. My friends call me a liberal and hence I am must be. I am right now very frustrated by most of what we call our elected officials as I am beginning to trust none of them. But right or wrong and whether it makes any difference to any other individual I will also vote because I feel personally that it is important. I really hate Holder and his views. I also hate Boehner.

Yes - I will vote for a Republican, when I cannot say - that will be determined by the candidate and his stated views.

Respectfully

James Ruby

OMG! Five pages of rabbit trails and slinging mud and no one has stated the obvious...All of these gun control bills around the country are coming from Demonkrats PERIOD! They all miss the point that it's not about how many rounds in a mag, or how evil the rifle looks but it's the lack of mental health care for the wackos who will go into a school or movie theater and shoot up the place. We gun owners need to get our heads out of dark smelly places and elect people who will defend the constitution. If we can't do that then the party is over! End of rant.:s0013:

I did not vote for the current POTUS and would like to defer to the esteemed Mr. Jefferson as to whom I will vote for in the future,
"I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever, in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else, where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent. If I could not go to heaven but with a party, I would not go there at all."

Blitz said it succinctly and in direct opposition to the outcome of this thread. He is a Revolutionary. I consider myself an American, perhaps they are two sides of the same coin. This division of liberal and conservative is bs and part of the problem. Instead of focusing on what beliefs or values make us different, focus on what we have in common. To do otherwise is to stand divided.
