As 'American Sniper' soars, will critics zero on 'gun culture?'

While American movie-goers are making "American Sniper" a box office record-breaker, critics are sniping back, taking all manner of shots at the film, and one might wonder whether some of this distaste is perhaps due to a subconscious reaction to the central core of the film: the story of a man who was remarkably proficient with a rifle.

I haven't read Dave's article yet. But I will say that it might be a non-issue today or next week. But I'm sure if the gun-controllers are successful in advancing their agenda eventually we could hear hunting rifles being called "long range sniper weapons capable of killing at long distances over the length of a school yard", or "it takes only one bullet". It's been played with as a tactic in Australia.

People are too stupid to realize the penetrating abilities and power behind full-sized rifle calibers/cartridges compared to intermediate evil black rifle calibers/cartridges..

Odds are they'll just want to ban the black ones (racist) as well as any tan or green ones.. Yes, just because of the color.. These low information types have not enough mental fortitude to understand firearms..
Which explains how Washington passed its BGC/registration bill.. Ugh.. And now Oregon is hot on her tracks..

If no one is talking about it, why press the issue. It's like FOX news ragging on Hillary for President all the while expecting us to not notice they are the ones putting her out their with the constant mantra. It's good for their ratings of course.

I'm not sure the average dumbazz antigun zealot can comprehend that this rifle is ultumately more devestating.... 97075.jpg ...than this more evil rifle... 71969_2.jpg

I understand the theory of "don't mention what's not on their radar yet" and maybe they will leave this alone.
Unfortunately it's already being discussed, just not in your face like the poster boy of "bad guns" the AR15.

The good thing about speculating out loud about what they will try and restrict next, is it might wake up the guy with no interest in evil black rifles or politics but has a few expensive hunting rifles in his safe!

The Liberal anti-gun politicians have an orderly agenda, picking away slowly at the edges first and working their way towards the core. Hunting rifles are last on the agenda. That keeps the hunters compliant for now, they hope.

Too many hunters really think they are immune to future anti-gun legislation and vote with that in mind.

IMO the anti's are the ones that benefit from keeping a lid on this, not us!

It's been discussed before in years past.

It is one of the reasons why California banned .50 BMG rifles even though most of them are single shot, and why I bought a .50 BMG rifle; I thought it would be a candidate for banning and I wanted to grandfather one. It didn't fly outside of states like California and I doubt it will just because of a movie.

I think the gun banners know that is a "bridge too far" for them right now, and that it would backfire in that it would scare a lot of gun owners who don't mind banning firearms they don't own or want, but would certainly come out of the woodwork to vote against someone wanting to ban or register their favorite target, hunting or varmint rifle.

Not every gun owner has an AR, AK, FN-FAL or other "black rifle", but almost every one has a hunting rifle of some sort, even if it was just handed down to them and they have never shot or hunted with it. Start talking about laws in any way restricting those and yeah, there will be a backlash, especially when it was just a movie and not any kind of real life incident that is the motivation.

<- Why there aren't any school shootings in Israel!
Teacher with long gun slung over her shoulder!!!

Actually I've never owned a hunting rifle but have several scary looking black guns, AK-47 pistol, Sig 556R and of course an AR along with a black KelTek SU-16C. Plus there's the KSG for short range firepower.

Everything is relative, the left hates America so will focus on anything that makes American values look bad. They can no more hold Kyle accountable for his killing the enemy than they can the golfer with his drones. I don't think Kyle had as many in collateral damage as the drone man.o_O

Well if there was a chance of it not being an issue, that will change when this thread gets all over the fricken net...... Snipers movies have already been out there for 5 decades for Sheites sake. No one made an issue out of it and yes they were mostly bolt guns.

I have a hornets out back and a sharp stick. Anyone want to try that one. I will give ya the stick for free............:s0013::s0040::s0054:

Everything is relative, the left hates America so... blah blah blah, blather blather blather.

Oh gawd, can we stop with the broad-brush brainless stereotypes, if possible, please? They don't "hate America" any more than anyone else. Their version of utopia is probably different than some other peoples'. The "right" has more in common with the "left" than there are differences.

It's WAY past time we sought the common goals and stopped letting the idiot media control our thoughts, or we're goners. It might be too late already.

That is not likely to happen unless the left stops embracing Islam, Marxists, and communistic ideals.
Socialism was bad enough, but it has gone far more to the left than that ever was now.
So when they wish to return to embracing our BOR and Constitution as it was intended and cut the other crap, then there might still be a chance of saving the country without a ground war.
That scenario is a real possibility, looking at the state of the country under people like Obama and his ilk in control.
You can look through the rosy red lenses, but that isn't the real world anymore. It progresses downward more every year.
AND Leftists make their own broad brushes..................

Its also very possible that like Quigley Down Under and Dirty Harry and Grand Tornino and other various movies that have inspired people to go out and by a certain firearm that this movie will bring more people into the shooting sports. Even if it some guy who just wants to shoot like the guy in the movie or shoot a similar rifle to the one in the movie. It could be a good thing.

but no matter we can always find something to argue with each other about just wait until tomorrow or the next day.

Well, that's because I'm always on the cutting edge, ahead of the crowd, a visionary :D:rolleyes:

And because I've got some small bit of experience with the gun prohibition lobby. ;)

Maybe the last election would give you a clue:D

The gun grabber's ultimate goal is to make it illegal to bite your PB&J into a shape suggestive of a weapon, and they will outlaw everything in-between including pointing your finger and going "pow! pow! pow!". We have known for years that hunting rifles will be re branded sniper rifles when they get to that point (unless we collectively get off our azzes and vote). It's already on the road map as is banning hunting (remember Bambi?) and any non-authorized entry into protected wildlife areas (anywhere outside liberal controlled metropolitan areas).

At the same time, we don't want to get the ball rolling by making this the next meme. The next meme needs to be how the overreach of the progressive agenda is making us less safe (especially for children).

Freedom is use it or lose it. Stand up and make your voice heard and above all vote and make sure everyone you know votes as well.

I'll package that Hornets nest up and include a free sharp stick and send it
right over, so you have a play toy to keep you busy.

They have been making Sniper movies since WWII. No one paid a bit of attention to them, so why stir it up..................:s0054:
I bet they will now though......like hand feeding a croc.
