Posting this in this forum because I expect people here will have more knowledge about the issue.

Costco currently has Original Wheat Thins on sale. We bought some and then noticed that the expiration date is "23August" so they are much closer to expiration than the usual 6-9 months. Internet search indicates that one can expect the contents to still be good nearly a year after the expiration date if stored in a cool, dark place. That makes sense. Does anyone here have a different opinion?

I am unsure if all these have similar expiration dates. If you buy some, pay attention to the date. It would make sense that they would be marking down inventory that is getting too old.

When were they made? Then add that 6-9 months to that.

One time I bought a large-ish quantity of saltine crackers and stored them in a cool dark storage closet.

I came back to them about 2-yrs later and opened a sealed sleeve of them and didn't notice any strange odors, but they (literally) tasted like dog piss smells…..

Going stale I understand, but I never would have thought that saltine crackers would (literally) go sour.

And no, I didn't finish the cracker I bit into!

If you try the seaweed/sesame seed snack sold by Costco, you will have flashbacks to your cracker experience, except it will have a strong taste of seawater added!

The place to ask how to extend the shelf life without losing taste is on the LDS sites. I'm pretty sure it involves keeping it out of light, heat, and oxygen. Maybe a sealed bucket with the oxygen removed. DR

As with anything stored in plastic wrapping, it will be edible, but if in longer term storage it will start to taste like plastic.

I grew up with Swedish rye hardtack. It stores really well. Our family made it about 10 inch diameter. Thinner and more perforated than traditional all wheat hardtack. Sardines, dry salami, smoked cheddar or gouda, Peanut butter and jam made up a substantial part of any back packing outing up to a week or so. The Swedish Rye you can buy in the stores is called crisp bread, similar, OK taste wise. We also made all wheat hardtack, they last even longer. more like really thick crackers and are great soup dunkers.
Any survival kit should include hardtack.

I've had stale wheat thins - I don't recall if they had been opened or how long they were past expiration, but they can go stale eventually. Didn't taste bad, you could just tell they were stale.

That said, being very dry and salted, I imagine they would last a long time, probably at least a year past "best by" date.

No worries, if they get old they become petrified and then you can use them to tile the floor in your shower.

In order to keep anything past it's expo. date I have to keep my daughter away from my cupboards. She has her letters and is a dietary specialist. All I ever hear from her is, "Dad you'll die from eating this stuff."
My wife has recently gotten into, "If an egg floats in water, it's no good.
What CRAP!
If it's runny, or stinks like sulfur...Don't eat it!

All Wheat Thins do is get harder and if cans aren't bulging, or leaking ...So what :s0092:
I've found that Peanuts go stale faster in a plastic container, than a glass one. :(

Anything I don't eat, the critters and the birds will. ;)

My favorite peanut are winco bulk roasted salted.. I keep them in the fridge and they last perfectly as long as I normally have them.. I eat at least 5lbs/mo, they're awesome.
All their almonds are meh, stick with blue diamond.
